Beatles remasters

I'm not really a Beatles kind of guy so I can't comment on this from experience, but I've always been told that the current catalog of Beatles discs sounds very good. I guess hybrid SACD's would be a step up.

If there were to be a full-catalog reissue I'd be concerned that it would end up another case of the kind of "remastering" that actually means boosting the lows and compressing the hell out of the signal. It seems like I've heard a lot of recent "remastered" discs that only sound boomier and louder than the original, without any increase in resolution or clarity.

You must not visit the Steve Hoffman forums very often!

Everyone and their brother is waiting breathlessly for some proper remasters, no sign. Closest was the recent box set that replicated the American versions of their first few albums.

Based on the way Let It Be Naked sounded, I would hang onto those original CDs! Rubber Soul and Revolver sound wonderful on CD. I can't imagine them sounding better. They could go into the later albums and correct the generation loss from the overdubbed stuff, but they would probably screw up the mix and apply digital reverbs to replace tape slaps and acoustic reverb chambers. I'd rather stick with what I've got. I didn't like what they did to the Rolling Stones SACDs.

See ya

Let it be naked was not a remaster, it was spliced (digital) together from different takes and (obviously) has different mixes.
It doesn't sound like a beatles album, which can also be a good sign

The surviving Beatles (and one significant other) signed off on the mix for Let It Be Naked, so that doesn't give me much hope for any remixing jobs that would likely be done for a re-release. George Martin's production was impeccable. All they need to do is use his original mixdowns. But I'm sure the urge to noodle will overtake them, and we'll be stuck with digitally processed, lumpy, muffled Beatles instead of the crystal clear sound of the original LPs.

By the way, if you ever get a chance to hear the bootleg of the acetate of the Get Back sessions given to Peter Sellers, jump on it. The raw sessions are a million times better than Spector and Naked put together.

See ya
Steve
