Ok, after much thought, I came out of the closet and bought my first hifi setup from Headroom...

*drum role please*

1 Grado SR80

1 Black Airhead Amp

1 Large Grado Revised Earpads




Ok....I bought this setup for its flexablility. I plan on using it for playing CDs from a portable, gaming from computer, and working out. It seemed like the most flexable solution.

Did I make a wise choice. How much improvement will I hear in "Gladiator", which I listen to religously, from stock. What about games?

I think you made a wise choice. The aSR 80's are supposed to have more bass than the 60's (which I own and love). As far as the Airhead. I think that is a great intro to the headphone amp world. You will be surprised how much an amp and good headphones can add to a PCDP. Welcome.

SR-80s are very nice sounding phones. IMHO in the Grado lineup the cans worth buying are SR-80s, SR-325s and the RS-1s. I think the SR-125s and 225s donot provide much improvement over the 80s to justify their price.

I just bought an airhead as well, and I'm quite happy with it. And if it makes you feel better, the SR80s would be on my shortlist of headphones to buy if I ever could use a pair of open phones.

Boy, was that a bonehead purchase!

Ok, just kidding. Congrats on your first headphone "rig." In my opinion the SR-80s are a great value for the money, you won't be disappointed with them. Especially with your new Airhead. Although they don't need an amp, I think they truly shine with one.

The only bad part is that you have just crossed the line to upgradeitis. As gaineso says, "Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about your wallet."

JMT, I know the Grados don't need an amp, but I bought one so I can control my volume in games. I highly doubt the Grado's have a volume dial on them...


BTW, I have a CDP without a line out, what do you think the correct combo of amp and cdp amplification is?
