Question about Microphones

My partner just got an Audio Technica AT9830 microphones to use with the HiMD for recording lectures.

I know this is very specific question, but basically, that mic is only around 1,500 yen (US$15 or so). For those who have experiences with lots of mics, how far usually a 15-20 bucks mic takes you, in terms of recording basic stuff such as university lectures? (not for something serious that requires tonal accuracy, eg. music gigs)

If it's presumably too bad even for lectures, then it means I have to ask her to get the higher end one.

Thanks.

Haven't used the Audio Technica AT9830! I'm using the Panasonic RP-VC201 Stereo Microphone with my MD recorder.

An excellent microphone for the money which can be used for recording lectures and conferences.

Pros:
- Good stereo sound quality.
- Don't need battery
- Light weight

I highly recommend this product.

Wow... after 11 days, finally a respond ! lol

Since there was no response, I just got myself another microphones from Sony.

It's Sony ECM-719. I think it's quite good one.

I still haven't quite used to MD yet, when I tried to record, and played it, the volume was very low. I need to work out how to make the recording sound louder.

If you are bit serious but still noob about recordings (and want to record noises , voices , acoustic instruments , all ) I advice the akg c1000s , it's a condenser companion which one do not regret once he get it , he do things normal mass mics ( the shures sm58 comes in mind ) don't , the price is very appealing for the class it pertains .

ECM-719! Not bad! This mike is using a small size LR44 type battery which can lasts for ages and ages. The length of the cord is perfect while I clip the mike on my trouser pocket! You may need to work on the direction where your mic is heading to.

If yhe ECM-719 don't work out for your, you may also try the Aiwa CM-DS6!

You can always boost the volume after recording on your pc by normalizing the wav file (i'm making the assumption that your recorder doesn't allow you to change recording volume once it startts to record...this was a major issue with Sony MD recorders back in the day). Also, i wouldn't go too crazy for an expensive mic if you're just recording lectures.

Also, are you using line in or mic in on your recorder? Try fiddling with your recorder+mic in your dorm, test it with your tv and stereo if possible and try to get accustomed to the recording features and how loud you need to set it to pull in a decent enough volume on both sources.

true ..
anyhow it can be found used for a relatively affordable price
(mind this mic will set you to start to try recording everything you'll hear, hear how beautiful a condenser type microphone record = instantly forget dynamic type mics ..)

anyhow if you are about mic-ing leatures only might be bit overkill
..image the hylarous scene " sorry professor ..with all regards .. do you mind me recording the lesson with this ...?"
