I need a quiet fan for cooling myself off during these hot summer months without sacrificing sound quality - any ideas?

Your wife or girlfriend (or both) with one of those big hand held fans.

might wanna try one of those ionic breeze fans or something similar. they actually dont have any moving parts, they use electricity to charge the ions in the air and move it using electro magnetism. makes absolutey no noise--kinda expensive tho.

one of those Typhoon fans with the vortex blades

ugly as all hell but also as quite as a fan can be and still work

Stay away from the cool looking Lasko fans at Walmart/Home Depot etc. It may say quiet on the box, but I've been through 3 now, and each one of them develops a loud rattle after 3 days use. Sounds like the damn thing is about to fall apart. Plus, for the first day the expelled air smells like burning wire... Talk about low quality

Yea they last about 8 months before coming apart at the seams. Literally.

You might also want to stay away from these thingers as well. I remember reading at least too threads here a month or so abo about how they induce ozone in the air...which means no bueno my friend!

Oh, and I second Tom's idea!

my Vornado fan is dead silent at decent levels, and darn quiet when at mid flow. it was $50 for the small one when i bought it, but they can probably be found for less online, or with a coupon to bed bath and beyond/linens n things

i should also add that not only is it quiet, and small, but its dial is on a potentiometer (i think) so it is fantastically adjustable, rather than being limited to only 2 or 3 settings.

I like the ion emitter in my bedroom. It's a relatively small (ca. $50) unit though that does not push much air. It does help with allergies, but since these things DO put out ozone I would not have it run overnight (unless you like to wake up feeling totally dehydrated) or while I am in the room for a longer time. Never use these things in a closed room without any airflow. Ozone is a common thing, you just don't want too much of it.

Basically:
Small unit = fine for air purification but not as a fan, affordable.
Big unit = probably unhealthy ozone output, maybe a nice fan, expensive.

I have a box fan from Kmart. I was worried about the sound quality of it also, so I modded it with an oxygen-free power cable and cryogenically treated blades. I run it through a power conditioner and it sounds fabulous. It does have some treble roll off when I set it to "Low", but usually I run it at "Med".
