Possible Amps for the HE90

Might as well start it...

I've only begun my research into an amp for the HE90. If you have any suggestions, I certainly would appreciate them. So far the options include the following:

HEV90
Blue Hawaii
KGSS
Stax amplifier - most notably the SRM-007t
McAlister EA-1
RudiStor Egmont series
Custom SinglePower electrostatic amplifier

Any others?

Best regards,

-Jason

Postscript: Unclear if they're still in production but Woo Audio appeared to have made an electrostatic amplifier

When I first read the title of the thread I misread it as 'Portable Amps for the HE90'... now wouldn't that be a trip.

Lol, well, is Bangradude getting a HE90? If so, he might have a use for one...

Best,

These are the three I heard. Singlepower's offering was on the fritz so I decline comment. To me the HEV90 was absolutely worth getting over the KGSS if price was no object. With the KGSS I was listening to the music, but I'm not sure if it wasn't all warmed up or what, but it seemed kind of detached. But the HEV90 just blew my socks off - it was like the amp and cans and source all disappeared and I was in the Vegas nightclub listening to Elvis call Ann Margaret the Devil in Disguise. Really, the best thing I've ever heard!

I already have the KGSS for the Omega IIs but want another electrostatic amp so I can have a second setup in the office or something.

I just checked out the McAlister EA-1 on his website and it looks interesting. Well, I am cheap so I kinda like Mr. McAlister's pricing! Just need some impressions from experienced headfiers.

A Singlepower electrostat amp is also interesting. The pricing and impressions are kinda unknown at this time, however.

I would love to have an HE90V. I wonder if Sennheiser has extra parts to build these beauties for $5K new?

The preamp/dynamic headphone amp that he is selling looks interesting as well.

I have heard th Gilmore offerings, Stax offerings and the Rudistor Egmont. While the Stax and Gilmore designs are fantastic...the Rudistor Egmont exudes a "Romantic" quality...something about it's sound that I cannot describe. The most "Tubey" sound for an electrostatic amp. Even the KGBH sounds SS.

I cannot comment on the build quality of the Rudistor - that is up to you to evaluate - but I do like the sound and cosmetics.

I have only heard but HE-90 with the KGSS, but I imagine that a tube amp on the warmer side of neutral would mate nicely.

Best I've heard is the HEV90 is was built to be used with (or vice versa ), over a KGSS or BH.

I'm also very for the HEV90. I wasn't as thrilled with the other amps but they were good also. That doesn't really help you does it.

I liked Mikhail's amp but I didn't get enough time nor have the material with me to form a real judgment...

Now that's a comparison you could spend a while waiting to get to listen to!

Jason - I think you've listed all the usual suspects in your initial post. I have only heard the HE90 with a Stax 007t, so am in no position to be advising anyone which amp is good, bad, best, or otherwise.

I can say, however, that the HE90 does sound glorious driven by that 007t with a Sony SCD-1 as source.

Your post got me to thinking, though, and half seriously, half tongue in cheek, I have a proposal to make. When these 18 new Orphei find their way to 18 happy Head-Fi'ers (or even some non Hear-Fi individuals - who knows?), maybe we should have an amp selection summit? A meet for the sole purpose of finding the most synergistic amp, cables, and sources for the HE90.

It would need to be in some easily accessible location (city with major airport), and Heard-Fi'ers from far and wide could convene with their HE90's and associated gear to compare and share. No need to limit to HE90 owners - Head-Fi is all about inclusion, in my mind, and there are many experienced ears out there with valuable listening skills to share.

So, what do you all think? Anyone up for that?
