AKG K340-mod owners

It seems I bought one stock K340 off ebay (Yeah, that was me).

I plan to mod it by bypassing the network for the woofer, recable it using something depending on what I hear from stock. I've got some Jena Labs cryo copper wire, various awg continuous cast magnet wire, solid core silver/teflon, etc.

For those who have the dual rewire mod, do I have to drill(?) a hole on the earpiece that currently doesn't have a wire coming out of it?

From what I read about K340 sound (softer treble, lush midrange, etc), it sounds like it would be perfect for my
Sonic Impact/Astron PS, which already powers my modded K1000 flawlessly. I will have to keep the volume pot very low, but I plan to just take the 4 DIY wire leads off the K340 and power them from speaker leads of sonic impact "balanced," which should be OK since the L and R ground is not shared (SI can't share ground). Anyone see any problems with this?

I should also try the K340 from my SuperMacro v.3, but who sells good quality 1/4" female->1/8" male adapter? (prefer no wire dongle between connectors)

P.S. I don't know why I bought another headphone b/c I really don't need it. Not a Senn fan and tried Grado HP1000's without love, and love my modded K1000, so I had to grab the K340

Can't help with the mods (only had mine silver recabled by Larry), but the K340 was a great choice to complement the K1000. Great for when you want a smoother, lusher presentation. Plus, the tonality of instruments & vocals is amazing; they sound more real and present than perhaps any other headphone I've heard. Enjoy

Can't help on the mods either, but am in the process of having mine professionally tweaked. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised once you receive them. Cannot say they are bright/trebly, but they certainly sound other worldly fast and eerily detailed/textured, as these qualities are usually associated with brightness, at least compared to other phones I had listened to. It's like going from talking about skin.. to epidermis, stratum corneum and pores of sweat gland

One thing I notice about them, they aren't the best choice for low volume listening. I usually turn up the knob a notch until the treble and lows become closer. And when they do, awesomeness..

For the 1/4" female->1/8" male adapter, I use a the Grado adapter. I like it better than the conventional type.

You might want to try biwiring it... silver to the electret and copper to the dynamic driver. Aerius and I have discussed this before and think it might be the best of both worlds with the K340. I think that if I ever take the time to rewire my K340's in balanced mode, I will also biwire it at that time.

Congrats on the K340's... you paid a lot, but they are basically new from the sounds of things. Nice find!

Not really hole, it's more like a cutout. I took a soldering iron and melted a semi-circular cutout in the right earpiece that sorta matches the rectangular one in the left. Then I trimmed off the sharp edges with an x-acto knife and sanded it smooth.

No problem at all, that's basically how I power mine off my amp except I use a 4-pin XLR connector for easier disconnection. The amp connects to a 4-pin XLR male plug and the headphone uses a 4-pin XLR female.

Dang, I was going to drive over there and pick up the K340 in person (45 min drive), but I just realized I have no time to do so for a while.

Do you guys know a good place to buy/order 4-pin XLR plugs and/or the Grado (like) 1/4->1/8 adapter for good price, mail order or in So. Cal?
