Only thing I've found to change the SQ(behind the driver) is the lack of screen or cup. The more freeflow the screen the better. If the CUP did much, no cup should sound bad, it sounds great. I can't tell the difference between whether a cup is present or not. Kinda makes you wonder about what type of hose job is being done with the PS-1000 doesn't it??

Guys, I don't want to turn this into a debate thread, it's my own impression. Just like how some people believe that recable and burn in changes sq while some don't.

Man, to all of you guys with AMAZING wood and metal cups, please pick up some Grado leather headbands...either second hand or from JMoney Audio, your headphones will look and feel infintiely better!

Exactly my findings. And if it was otherwise, tinkering on Gradsessandros would be a severe pain in the ass - like tinkering on "real engineered normal" cans, where modifications are damned difficult, as most attempts decrease SQ severely.

That is why we love tinkering on the good-natured Gradessandros so much, you really can't do wrong, they (almost) always sound great, no matter what you try. Padrolling? No problem. Freaked wooden or aluminium cups? Whatever you desire.

But, please, no snake oil. Beauty and pride is enough reason for cables and cups.

How's the sound? I've read that jumbos don't really sound well with the hf2.

I agree. When I cover the cups of my Grado with my hands, the sound turns to crap. Notice how the cups he posted don't have screens. I guess that's why he perceived a change in SQ. Put screens on those cups and I bet the SQ difference will be nada. Or he can always leave em screenless but I doubt that that'd be good for the drivers, lol.

I like the Quilted Northern TP rolls much better than the Charmin. The Charmin produce a bloated Muddy single note Bass tone that gets worse if you have the Temerity to "Squeeze them".

So please don't squeeze the Charmin!

winwin

soundstage definitely increases, but unlike the MS-1(000) mod where the sound signature is essentially retained if not improved, the HF-2 does not scale as well. Sibilance is ever so slightly increased, plus the mids seem a tad more recessed. Honestly, I've had a very brief listen to it this morning, so I can't really give you an informed opinion. I'll definitely post back on the HF-2 impression thread once I'm able to fully decipher the sound. But for now, you are correct, HF-2 with Bowls or HD414 pads has the advantage. Also, there's very little burn in w/ the cans.

hhmmm... these are open type headphones iirc ...hence, why cover cups of your Grado headphones ? lol

I'll post more impressions once my new cups are done, I already shipped the 1st pair. I'll get a screen as well to see if that's what is changing the sq. But still, I do believe a change in material used will have an impact on sq.

You did recall correctly. That statement was said to further prove les_garten's point that the more freeflowing the screen is, the better. Hence, covering the cups with one's hands makes the headphone sound worse.
I believe even the screen relies on the material used.
By the way, if the cups don't improve the sq, why would they bother using better materials starting from sr325is? And for the metal grados, why would they bother treating the metal to improve porosity if it does not change anything?
