Have you ever heard the Bushmills X?

They really aren't a closed back HP, they're vented around the circumference of the cups and sound just like an open back.

The Bushmills did sound nice though!

Never heard them before but I am willing to make my own version of it.

Well like I said, the Bushmills really dont sound like a closed back HP…but if you like the looks, then thats a different story, otherwise they will sound the same as an open back if you design the cups like the Bushmills. But if you really make closed back cups for the 80/125, I would think they would sound similar to you covering the stock Grado cups with the palms of your hands, which doesn't sound so good, try it and see what you think…let me know what you hear.

I have done the hands over the cups on each of the models that I own,at some point and it is not appealing. That being said,I am not dissuaded from coming up with a plan. Common sense says go with a vented cup but I don't think a vented cup would be exactly the same as an open cup. Soundstage is the first thing that comes to mind. Ultimately my goal would be to make it sound differently than any Grado that I own.

There's a user named Kopral on the forums who makes cups/knows someone who makes cups. I think I saw him post an attempt at a pair of Bushmills style cups. Try dropping him a line.

When the Bushmills first came out, if I recall correctly, John Grado was quoted talking about a small piece in f wood that extended from the outer (closed) part of the cup down to touch the back of the driver...they might have put something that looks like a golf tee in there to help direct sound waves out of the vents they put under the lip of the Bushmills. This is speculation on my part though.

Can one of the Bushmill owners open his cup to take a picture? :gs1000smile:
