I've also used this approach to 'liberate' Grado drivers before.

I recommend using masking tape to cover the front / rear of the driver to avoid dust ingress

grado. drivers. liberated. (celebration in the streets!)

i actually cracked the driver housing when trying to pry off the outer plastic part. whatever older glue grado used for the sr225 was industrial-strength and it wouldn't budge at all. i'm superglue-ing it right now.

once my friend drops off the shears for the mesh, i can cut it to fit in the housing...and then finish these babies. hopefully tonight.  the mesh in the grado sr225 is 2 inches in diameter. the housing for the cups i have are about 1-11/16 inches in diameter.

That sounds intense. The first time liberating was the hardest for me...from then on it was easier...

For the 225 mesh, think about using pliers to bend the sides of the circle up...I did that once and it worked well. Gave a little pressure against the walls to hold the mesh in place.

Nice tip about bending the mesh. I might actually give that a go...

Why don't you give it a shot, you'd make a good chunk of change.

I'm looking for some soft leather to try my hand at making some.

finished my grado woody project:

- sr225 drivers and headband complex

- lignum vitae wood cups courtesy of @fleasbaby

- canare L-4E6S w/sheathing removed, litz braid

- techflex up to the y-split, paracord to the ear cups

- viablue y-splitter

- neutrik 4-pin xlr

- some knock-off grado l-pads

i might re-cable it...this one is a bit stiff. and i'm going to order one of those turbulent headbands...and maybe try some different pads.

it was a pain getting the drivers liberated, as i've posted previously. the one driver housing actually cracked a little (the one with the dirty cloth screen), but i superglued it and it seems to be ok. i spray painted the screen black and bent the screen to fit inside the housing.

sound? so far pretty good. i haven't had much time to listen to it extensively and my next to-do is to compare it to my hf-2. i also want to see how it compares to my he-500...

anyway, here are some pics...

I'll jump on the @fleasbaby hype train!

SR80is in curly maple cups with a custom cable from @wje mounted on an Auvio headband.

Nice...I loved how those cups sounded actually...had a pair of SR60 drivers in them for a little while, and they really reacted well to the wood and that shape.

been doing some quick A/B-ing b/n my woody sr225 and HF2. the HF2 are definitely clearer, with a tighter bass and a tad big brighter top end.  the sr225 does seem to have a tad bit wider soundstage, though. and it's warmer in tone. if i had to choose between the two i'd certainly say the HF2 are "better," but at less than half the cost of the HF2, my sr225 woodies are a really great "bargain"...

This is good to know...I have never had the pleasure of hearing a pair of HF-2. Would be interesting to see what your thoughts on the Magnum X vs the HF-2 are.

If you can find something in a hardwood, give it a go. I am not regretting my Lignum Cups for my Magnums.
