Not only just sexy, but the black walnut has some great sound to it, too.

Thanks guys!

Yes the Black Walnut has some great sound.

I'm thinking I’d like to make some simple cups of five or six different tone-woods and make them available to some headfiers that would like to write up their impressions.

I was thinking if I put a slit instead of a hole for the cable and made them so the driver would fit tightly without the need for tape you could switch cups easily if the cable was already soldered onto the driver.

What do you guys think?

I'd be more than willing to do this, the way I have my Grados, I can easily slip a cup off and put a new one on. This is something I could actually do in between band and school and work. PM me!

Interesting!  I received my Magnum v.5 on Saturday and have been using the headphones quite a bit on late Saturday and on Sunday.  I have the RS1i and the PS-500 from Grado.  Both of those currently serve a unique process and I appreciate what each of them is capable of.  However, it had been a while since I owned Magnum-based headphones ... all the way back to v.4 and v.3.5 before that.  I was actually surprised on how well the Magnum v.5 could perform.  I had read another post where one indicated that v.5 had a bit less bass.  I'm not sure what that was compared to.  But, in my case, I thought the v.5 was very good sounding.

I'm not really ready to make a precise ranking with the Magnum v.5 in comparison to my RS1i and PS-500 because I have some more testing and listening to do.  However, for the price paid, it is quite an excellent performer.

I'll just throw this out there...

I like the PS500 and RS1 better then the V5...

but I like the V5 better then the RS2 and everything below...

The V5 is boring vs the RS1 and PS500... However it is very competent from a performance stand point... a excellent value!

I personally just feel much more engaged and in the music with the PS500 and RS1 (need to actually buy one and stop demoing the local pair)

I've owned all of these mentioned above and would agree with you on this. To me the Grados were more engaging with the music and I prefered Grados vs Magnum. But as you said, very good performance and value out of the Magnums, plus great fun building them/putting them together!

I won't mind getting a pair (Especially the pairs from the right) and try them out ...
But I'm not much of an expert, like many others here, in reviewing them ... Won't mind trying them in comparing with my paduok that you made ...

I'm going to make the cups very simple, they will just be a straight pipe, no lip for a screen. Right now I have Padouk, Black Cherry and African Mahogany.

I will make a set of Walnut and Maple and when I fit them for a driver, I'll see who's interested and get things rolling. Start a new thread.

These are the cups I have now. I'm going to cut out lip for the screen and for the Padouk the outer lip also.
