Clear diaphragm - no no, don't mess with it.

Black plastic - fair game, for me so far at least. I have melted a tiny bit near the driver magnet and have had no issues. anything done to the plastic driver shell shouldn't do much harm, it's messed around with a lot during full liberation.

The black plastic, right next to the metallic circle.

Can you send a pic?

I wish there were more Grado mods. That would be great, but you can only do so much before they stop being Grados.

If the melted area isn't so severe that it seems to jepordize the structural integrity of the driver, I would think it would be okay. As I stated before, I have gotten the iron to close to that area and melted it a bit, but have seen no issues from it.

Yes, SPC 26awg from BTG-Audio, I'll probably solder that on as soon as I get to braiding it. Any items you guys use for braiding? I remember somebody mentioning a octogonal shaped item that helped you braid up to 8 cables, but I can't find it. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

Thats just it, the driver and cable are pretty much the only thing left thats Grado on mine. I don't see the point in recabling my Grados because I've heard that it doesnt make any noticeable  difference from several people. Even then I still would recable mine but soldering is something that I have only done a few times and with how much time I've put into my Grados already I would die if I wrecked them now. Maybe one day I will find someone to learn me in the ways of recabling my Grados.

this is one way of stripping them. Use side cutters or flush cuts or whatever you wanna call em' and be very careful to no damage the inner housing. up top by the solder pads you will see 2 tiny wires that go back into the housing from the pads... those go to the voice coils... DO NOT DAMAGE THEM... if you do the thing is most likely FUBAR.

Where are the voice coils?

Inside the housing
