Damn Archigius, beautiful SR225i.

I really need to pick up a pair of Grados again... I'm gonna be on the lookout for an SR60i that I can mod.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

beyerdynamic DT 770 Stereo Headphones
Grado Prestige Series SR125i Headphones
Grado Prestige Series SR325is Headphones

Are you sure?

We've had rumours about changed glue procedures for years, but it finally always turned out to be the same old glue that gets liquid when being heated. That ones that were hard to open (I did that with more than a dozen meanwhile, but no "i" version to be honest) only had considerable amounts of that glue...

I've opened the new ones and the old ones and didn't notice any difference.

Not any different from what I can tell, but then again I am not a "cables make a difference" guy.

A million thanks for this one ! It sounds safe and efficient.
This is all you need. I used backwards clothes pins in order to keep pressure on the cups. A little bit of heat from the hairdryer and the came right apart.

I've decided to call them "SR225 special"

Every mod i did brought great improvements, expecially the Cardas cable, who made the midrange warmer and more natural. I never thinked that a cable could make all these differences.

I'm very curious to know how these modded SR225 can compare to highter end models like RS2 and RS1, but i never listened to hi end Grados. This is because i think now my headphones sound much better than the original model.

I'm pretty sure. I've heated up my cups for over 5 minutes with no success.

And I seem to remember someone posting that in this thread.

For my HF2, it surely looks like hot glue so heat should work. And if I can re-use the old glue..that's even better !
I'll try it before ordering any cable... just to be sure not ordering something for nothing !

What are you, some kind of Rodeo Cloowwwnn!

You in a hurry or sumthin'?

The amount of time you heat has nothing to do with it.

It matters how warm the glue gets in the seem.

It takes a while for the heat to "soak" into the joint.

When I heat mine, I keep puling my gloves off and checking how warm the cups are getting. Don't get in a hurry. Who cars it it takes 30 minutes. Keep checking how much heat is in the cups and put just enough heat in till they twist apart.

Heres my first mod.

Sanded off the letters of my SR225 and blacked out the grill and re-did the split in the cable because it was tearing.

All black, Metal setup.

I just fitted my new woodies, from Nickchen, to my SR325is's. Look good and sound good.!!Just leaves the igrado's now.Ha Ha.
Just for the record, the 80i's were held together with some sort of superglue, which cracked off when i pushed a spoon between them. The 325is's had loads of hotmelt, which slid off when i put the cups in hot water.

Hi !

First, sorry for my english, I'm french (remind me of Monty Python sketch :P).

I bought a Grado SR325i but I can't stand the piercing highs. I'm looking forward for someone to buy wood cups (is it right that they lower those highs ?) but Jmoney Audio and others are quite expensive.

I saw on a other thread that someone was here doing "cheaper" wood cups, if this person could send me a PM, thanks !

Sooner or later, we're going to get a "Grado Mod" picture of somebody's frustrated Grado project tossed off an overpass and ground to pieces by traffic. Then again, why do that to a Grado when there are Bose headphones just waiting for duty? Somebody needs to show us what a QC3 sounds like at the point of impact.

I can't make the wooden cups, but the chamber material has no difference in the sound. Only the length of the chamber, and that makes it change minutely.
