AKG K501 purchase - Page 2

Oski: Quite so, yup... One can nicely compliment it with an evil K240S, though...

Greetings from Hannover!

Manfred

P.S.: How is the used market for Tandberg audio equipment in Norway, btw? Or could there even be found some nos Tandbergs somewhere? *eyes beginning to gleam*

What you must realise is the light side of the force so to speak is more numerous namely, Senn signature headphones. Therefore the dark side which is not as numerous yet more powerful and enjoyable too belongs to the Grado/AKG/Beyer fans, hence the dark side reference.

Sorry If you were offended pops....

No AKG's are not the dark side but for the bass loving majority of music listeners they definitely are the dark side.
Ouch!!!!!!! No ever called me "pops" before. I'm a very young-at-heart 42 (I hope).

Which headphones do you think Darth Vader had built into his helmet/mask???

I suppose the perfect set of cans would be equal in balance between the Dark and Light sides.......

Someone mentioned comfort a while ago...that's one of the things I've really come to appreciate about these. I use them at work, typically all day. I've tried several other cans, and these are the best for that kind of lengthy duty.

They are IMHO a very good value, but they definately need amping. Enjoy...

Grados appear to be one of the most popular headphones around the dark side must be in abundance then

What's the least expensive amp that will drive the 501s?

Even a cmoy can drive the 501s. But if you want quality sound I suggest...

Portable: Portaphile2
Non-portable: M3.

My soundcard can drive 501, hah It don't sound so good though. I recommend at least a $300 amp (m3, ppa, gilmore lite)

Actually, I used my Pany SL-S120 PCDP to drive my K501s for a while, and the sound was okay (the volume did have to be turned up pretty high).

I must of lucked out when I bought the Panasonic. I remember going into Circuit City many years ago without a clue about audio, and this was the first PCDP I ever bought. I remember the sales associate trying to get me to buy one with 'anti-skip', but for some reason my intuition made me go with the SL-S120...
