Only one way to find out if you'll like the SR-71 is to give it a listen. It's a shame you've already shelled out so much dough for the other amps and still haven't found what you like.

But, if you are going to give it another shot... Ray's amps might be your best bet.

The HR-2 still brings smiles to my face everytime I listen to it.

Good Luck!

Yeah, in spite of all the other gear I own, the HR-2 still gets the most hrs for headphone listening. Just make sure you have a good source.

That HR-2 looks soooo good. But its so expensive! I've rarely seen one of those used too.

The SR-71 looks good but i just cant stand the fact its battery power. At work we never turn our equipment off, sometimes we have sessions lasting 12 hours at a time. The idea of having to replace batteries is just not feasible.

HR-2=perfect; it's always on too! Doesn't even have a power switch.
as Ray says, "It's always on, ready to please."
Yeah, I kinda forgot about your budget but the HR-2 would never be regretted (IMO, of course). It really can drive all sorts of cans w/ authority.

CPW, im REALLY interested in the XP-7. Do you think this would be a good choice?

Yeah. Good point. The sound of an RSA amp without the price tag of an HR-2 and w/out the battery requirements of the SR-71. I went for the SR-71 because of the awesome sound and portability. I haven't spent much time w/ an XP-7 but my guess is that it has most of the sound of the HR-2 w/out the price tag. I believe it also allows for op amp rolling so you have some room to tailor the sound.

I auditioned the XP-7 prior to going "all-the-way" for the HR-2. It is a good amp. However, note that if you purchase it with a power supply, the price comes out to nearly $700. Which is not too far from the HR-2 ($900). IMO, it is better to save up the extra $200 and get the HR-2.

The reason why I didn't not to buy the XP-7 was because I felt that the amp had a bit of a metallic bite on the upper end on some CDs. On older CDs - or brighter recordings - I felt the sibliance a bit too much. But I was in love with the Emmeline's signature sound, hence the HR-2.

Don't let this discourage you though. I auditioned the XP-7 more than a year ago with its stock op-amp. I think stock OP-Amp for the XP-7 is different now. Still, because the amp permits op-amp rolling (i.e., switching), I hear from others in this forum that the XP-7 could come close the HR-2's performance if you use the same - my memory fails me... the AD797 op-amp? - op-amp as the HR-2.

I can't remember either. I do think the HR-2 and XP-7 were originally supplied w/ different op amps (not sure why).
I'd contact Ray directly if you are considering more than one of his amps.
Who knows better?
OTOH, it's a little like asking a parent which of their children they prefer.
When I originally spoke to Ray he steered me away from the XP-7 and the Stealth and toward the HR-2 but that was at a certain point in my system's evolution and before the aquisition of my Meridians (I think.)
I have since purchased a Stealth and an SR-71.
They're all great products.

If you liked the NAD so much, go get one.

I think im going to settle with the XP-7*.

Also, bin, who are you talking to? Better yet, get with the convo. I have a NAD and i like it. However its size dose not warrant it for work use. I use it at home while it is hooked up to my main system.

edit: "XP-7"

Your first post doesn't mention anything about work or size limits. Admittedly I didn't read the rest.

no prob. The NAD has its strengths. But im sure there is MUCH better stuff out there. Ive just had some bad luck, mostly because of the MSPRO's and my system. IF i was running it out of an audiophile CD player i would of settled with the gilmore.
