I was on ebay and made an impulse buy on a huge dvd-a collection of some of my favorite djs, namely tiesto, paul van dyk, and ferry corsten. I was somewhat assuming\hoping the dvd-a would play in my Dvd player. Was i wrong in this assumption?

Yes they will play in a regular DVD player, but you will be listening to the compressed dolby digital track and not the high resolution mlp track (you need a dvd-a player for that).

Carapola. Are dvd-a players cheap? Or are they sacd players? am i way off?

They'll still sound decent, though only DVD-Video (audio track) quality. Also, some older ones might've been authored so they only play in DVD-A capable players. If you want full quality you'll need to purchase DVD-A capable player. SACD is different from DVD-Audio and not all SACD players play DVD-A discs (in fact, most high-end SACD players don't). You can get universal DVD-A/SACD/DVD-Video/CD players for about $200 at the low end of the spectrum.

Do you want one that only plays dvd-a or one that plays both sacd and dvd-a?

Tooshiba SD-4960 and Samsung HD-both 841 (same player, different brand) both play DVD-A (and SACD) and are fairly cheap. You should be able to find them under $100 or so.

And no, DVD-A and SACD aren't same. They are a different format.

Also the Pioneer 588a, just out, plays all formats for about $120

The Samsung and its clone, the Toshiba, don't do a DSD>>PCM conversion on SACD playback, whereas the Pioneer will do such a conversion.

I'm not saying that such a conversion can't be transparent, but why go through such a conversion in the first place?
