Sony electronics have become highly disappointing in recent years. I will no longer buy any Sony electronics every again after a few sour experiences. However, for some reason, their headphones, and even their speakers, seem to sound ok to me.

Sony is responsible for some of our hobby's best CD players, minidisc players, DAPs, IEMs, and two very legendary headphones. Sony still makes some of the best headphones you can buy under $500.
But then I'm an unabashed Sony fan.

Sony did revolutionize the music world, particularly the home music world. They should be commended for this. But, in recent years, their business model has allowed others to surpass them in terms of quality and price/performance. Sony's home electronics are no longer top tier. Their quality and performance has decreased, but prices haven't. Times change, and Sony's adaptation to the changes wasn't what we had hoped for.
But, I do like their headphones and speakers.

I'm not sure what home electronics you are referring to, but as far as audio gear goes, Sony is still competitive. Their X, A, and new Z series Walkmans are very good DAPs that have better sound quality than a lot of their competitors. Their EX600 IEM is a very good value for money and still one of the best all-around universal IEMs you can get for under $200. The EX1000 is one of the better universal IEMs right now period. The SA5000 and Z1000 full-sized headphones are very well built and exude quality.
And as far as value goes, you can always pick up their previous generation audiophile CD players used, and the price to performance ratio is better than many models being released now by other brands for twice as much.
Obviously this is just my opinion. I feel they're still a strong player in the world of audio, especially portable audio. Their R&D department is one of the finest in the audio world.

Walkman, discman, trinitron tvs, cd players...etc. They were all revolutionary and brought quality to the masses. They were once top tier products for the consumer masses. We're not talking boutique market, but the general market. Now, their quality has fallen behind other manufacturers.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. I look at the Z series Walkman just released by Sony, I see something every bit as capable---and in terms of sound quality much more capable---as an iPod.

Uh, no. Sony is experiencing a resurgence. In the mid 90's through the mid 2000's they were too big and bloated with too many divisions and a bad corporate model. They took over ended up killing off Aiwa when they shouldn't even acquired anything business-wise. They were pretty much a Joke. They have been making a comeback in recent years. There quality and performance has been improving. Some areas more slowly than others and they are not to where they were by any stretch just yet but the more recent years have Sony becoming a "player" again. For example, not too long ago a Head-fier(not a very good one, lol) could listen to a pair of XD400's out of a Sony Bean. Do I need say any more than that.
