He sometimes has phases with reduced steadiness. Impossible to keep contact then.

I'm considering a pair of Beyerdynamic DJX-1's (for DJing), and I thought I'd chime in.

They are available in the US now (granted there was ~2, almost 3 years between the previous posts and this one), and as of time of writing, the cheapest price I've found was ~$130 from B&H Photo.

From the looks of it, it is still special ordered, but $130 seems to be a good price given all the pricing information given in the previous posts.

Also, I had been looking for headphones that don't stick out absurdly when worn; I have a pair of HD280's and RP-22X, and both headbands stick out really far above the ears.

are these cirumaural or supraaural earcups?

They are supraaural, except you have very small ears ;-)
I still like them very much, they remind me of the K-501 but with more bass. The only thing that anoys me is the strong pressure on the head (but that normal for a DJ phone). I mainly use them for recording sessions as they are isolating well so that you don't pick up the music from them.
I had a chat a while ago with a greek DJ, who also said the soundquality is much better than other DJ Headphones in that pricing range. The only problem he had was that the swivel mechanism got broke on his DJX-1 3 times already... So better tread them with a little more care than you have to do with DT-770 / 880 / 990

how is the SQ compared to the AKG K81DJ (k518dj) too?

this are the darkest cans i ever heard, not good for an unamp cans, dirrect from ipod...hard to drive, the bass aren't deep, only bloated bass...but yes the bass itself are much more than DT990pro...no Beyer that will shine without an proper amp, IMHO...

note:
i'll rather pick K518dj than this one...
