Is Foobar worth it?? Or forget it?? - Page 8

post #106 of 148
Wait,so I should keep the software volume on max the whole time?
When not using ASIO (watching a dvd with powerdvd),does it matter if i change volume in software or not?

I've never heard a difference, but keep away from the low volumes, it kills the left-right balance on some cards.

All credits to Mr. Brumal, except that he confused the hell out of me.

Instead of following the instructions, the Images folder must be in the PanelsUI folder.

So u'll get something like ...../Foobar/PanelsUI/Images/Brumar-Winter/ >>>PIX<<<

Only i don't get the jumping bars thingy, so if you are able to fix that, please share with me .

[edit] Oh, and to get the Album Art in big, press the third button from the right. The most right button is to show the Foobar-bar, if the creator just posted that somewhere i didn't have to delete the file everytime.

BTW, you will need ALL of these .dll's.
* Album list panel
* Columns UI
* CWB Hooks
* Egoh Spectrum Analyser
* Explorer Tree
* Panels UI
* Play Count
* Quick Search Toolbar
* Lyrics panel

Here they are: <Click me !
Wow, thank you! Above and beyond

That's hot as well Could you post the code/linky? Wow, I've missed out on loads.

Dont worry,I've always kept away from low volumes,they kill my sound immersion as well.

Hey LFC_SL, to fix the 'bouncing bars' thingy in both Winter and Treeline you have to some thingy's:

Winter:

RMB on empty place on the bottom -> settings... -> change the S to Z of the word ANALYZER in this line:
// spectrum analyser
$panel(Vis,Egoh Spectrum AnalySer,10,$sub(%_height%,10),$sub(%_width%,$get(rightPanelWidth),30),10,)

Pretty retarded bug, aint it .

As for treeline you'll have to RMB on the empty center space, go to settings and delete the // in front of the spectrum analyser code.

...kind of annoying that nobody says that in the skin's thread, or even fix it.

Thanks
One question about lyrics. I never did use lyrics before How do I get it to work? I mean where do I store them? Any specific place I need to download them from or just any old lyric site will do?

Edit: Ignore. Such a noob. Add lyric tag!!!

Yes, that's right. Changing the volume on the computer uses digital volume control, which degrades quality. If you take a 16 bit sound sample and drop the volume to 50%, it becomes a 15 bit sound sample. At 25% volume it becomes 14 bit and so on. For non-power-of-two volume drops, it gets even worse because you also get additional aliasing from errors in the maths.

Analogue volume controls, such as the controls built in to your amp, don't have these problems.

For ASIO/kernel streaming, volume should always be 100%. In fact, the Winamp KS plugin has an option to disable volume control built in. Even for DVDs, it's best to have the volume at 100% and use your amp controls.

NO NO NO, you need to change another thing .

Yeah, both of the Brumal skins are bugged like hell!

Again press RMB on the Lyric window (or under the buttons if SETTINGs doesnt show) -> Settings ....

Then you have to change:

This.
$panel(Lyrics,Lyrics Panel,$sub(%_width%,$get(rightPanelWidth)),$add(10,$get(extraOffset)),$get(rightPanelWidth),.....

Into

This:
$panel(Lyrics,Lyric Show,$sub(%_width%,$get(rightPanelWidth)),$add(10,$get(extraOffset)),$get(rightPanelWidth),......

Then it automaticly downloads the lyrics .

Thanks,didnt know. I actually am planning on building an HT setup with a speaker amp running straight out of soundcards (probably auzentech elude unless something better comes out) analog outs,and there wont be a volume knob..Having a preamp also degrades the sound,right ? and it degrades my wallet by about $500 (for a good one).

Hmm well I only just read your post, but a curiosity

I use Mp3Tag. Extended tags > add new field > LYRICIST. I then pasted the lyrics copied from a website. Save. Works great. Second song, did the same. Nothing.

I notice for the first song Mp3Tag auto created a second field called LYRICS. So two fields called LYRICIST and LYRICS with the song lyrics inside them. On the second file there was no LYRICS field created. Odd? So I created LYRICS myself and pasted the song lyrics text.

On foobar though, for the second song, the lyrics are on show but they do not scroll and the current line is not highlighted. Same properties as the first song so I do not get why it is not working?

I really can't say what is wrong, but u should try to merge the lyric with the Lyricshow plugin, when right clicked on the lyric show panel you get such options.

With most songs i tried Lyricshow did pretty well , without moving a muscle .

Having an external analogue volume control will degrade the sound a lot less than using the digital volume control on the PC.

You have to consider what you want from a HTPC. If it's mainly for movies, get an integrated receiver. Not only will you be able to control the various levels of the surround sound speakers and tweak for individual movies (sometimes you need to boost the centre, just to hear what people are saying, for example) but you won't loose much, if anything over a pure power amp. If it's for music, either just get an integrated amp (I had a really good Rotel with just volume and input selectors) or separate volume control. In fact, it would be easy to build a volume control (it's a potentiometer and some wire.)

You could even get a DAC with volume control and a much cheaper soundcard (like the AV710.)

In short, just do anything other than rely on the computer for volume control.

In my X-Fi I get a buzz if I use the volume over 80% only if I plug my headphones directly into it, should I keep the volume less than the buzzing point or 100% when I'm using my amp?

That is strange to hear (that a reciever wont be much worse than a good amp),because everywhere else I read that recievers usually have wimpy built in amps and that going from a $500 reciever to a $500 emotiva lpa-1 amp (one im looking at) makes a big difference. I dont want compromises in sound quality when watching HD content,and I hope to raise enough $$$ for 5.1 Onix rockets setup,I dont think a reciever would do it justice.
External DAC wont suffice (you cant carry the full resolution Dolby True HD or DTS HD over a digital cable,and an external 6 channel DAC that would top the sound quality of Prelude would probably cost a fortune).Is the digital volume control really that bad for sound quality,that you would recommend me to go for a reciever just to drop it? What steps are being taken by microsoft/creative/whoever to improve the quality of the digital volume control?

The E-MU 0404 can leave DTS intact after processing, but i don't know about HD, and DD True HD.
