My aunt is coming in from HongKong and i have the opportunity to ask for a DAP...any suggestions of something cool they got there that we dont have here in north america? or do they basically have the same stuff for the same price?

I have a 200 dollar (canadaian) limit though, from my parents.

I'd rather get a hard drive player but any cool flash ones would be welcome too i guess.

thanks

edit: doing some research the toshiba gigabeat looks pretty damned cool...does anyone know how much it costs? or how to look it up? or if it IS in hk?

I think you can't really find a HDD-based player under $200 CDN, but one of the best Flash MP3s you can find is Craetive MuVo Micro N200 or iRiver N10 or iRiver iFP-XX0 series.

Speaking of hong kong.. I have a friend going there soon, what kind of goodies do they have in those parts, anything worthwhile?

Hong Kong will have everything the United States has along with a myriad of unique players never seen here. For instance:

tell your aunt not to buy from large retail stores, their prices are often high and fixed meaning you can't bargain.

i assume she knows people, so tell her to ask where she can get players for cheap(er). HK is full of players from japan but more so from korea and china (iRivers and creative micros are more popular than ipods), i just returned from my holiday there and there's stuff i've never heard of before.

if you're worried about warranty and stuff, it's not going to make a difference if you go for a large retail outlet or small bargain hut because you're going to be a few thousand miles away if it breaks! a lot of players come with international warranty.

Any sites out there that have a good selection of mp3 players, preferably flash in hong kong? I know nothing about the brands or where to look. And google hates me, I can never find crap that I'm looking for.

The Toshiba Gigabeats ARE available in HK according to a friend who is currently working there. I can't remember how much he said they cost, but I remember comparing the prices on Audio Cubes, and it was a good deal cheaper.

Wow, that cube one looks pretty cool.

Does anyone know what the sound quality is like or how many gbs (or mbs) it has?

Check out this site (http://dapreview.net/news.php ). You will see a lot of cool DAPs not found here in the states.

yeah im on DAPreview all the time

Do you guys think an iPod would be cheaper in HK? I'm going to ask her to look for the prices so if you guys don't know thats ok, i just thought i'd ask since in case someone here knew and then if it wasn't any cheaper I could help my aunt avoid the hassle of looking.

i still think the gigabeat is pretty hot. the iriver x5 is pretty cool lookin too... but the gigabeat...oh man.

Reading from a computer book I brought about a week ago (I'm in HK)

If you want space, Creative Nomand MuVo2 FM should be good for you...

Just about 25-50 Canadian dollars over 200. 5Gb, not bad...

or you can have the new Sony NW-E105, 512 Mb.
The prices range from $ 201-271.

BTW: Toshiba gigabeat MEGF20 (20 Gb)
cost from $374.59-398.50

@ mudlouse, I don't think you can bargin anymore in HK (this is not China), the most is that they will have it cheaper then the big large retail stores.

Edit: The book even tells the price and the store that have that price.

well you can try.

my brother bought a laptop and although we didn't get anything off the price, we did get a load of extras. i'm assuming some of thoses extras were supposed to be included anyway but you know how stingy sales people can be.

so the point is, always bargain, ALYWAYS

lol....but most of the times I will buy in a large retail store, one of my aunt have discount in one of them... (no bargin there)

BTW if you want to pay a bit more for a good player, get the JNC SSf-M3 (20 Gb), even in the large retail stores it is only about 1900 Hk, which is about 300 Canadian dollars (well, paying 100 more is kinda a lot). Still, that is a really good player. (It is the same as iAudio M3 right? People can still download the firmware from iAudio even if the have the JNC version one?)

argh, i'm really starting to loathe shopping in HK simply because stores over employ staff.

even when you walk past the shop, they literally grab hold of you and shove some nokia phone in your face. then, when you do enter the shop for a browse, there's no less than half a dozen sports-jacket-uniformed people just standing there staring at you like you're a thief!

iPod won't be cheaper in Hong Kong, it's around the same price in the US/Canada. The most you will save is the tax. With $200CAD, you won't be able to buy most of the new HD players on the market. A flash player is most likely.
