I've been searching the forums here for the last couple of days and gotten really good information; unfortunately I could probably keep searching for a week and not find quite the comparisons I'm looking for.

I am looking for a semi-portable, sealed phone, either circumaural or canal type for use at home with my computer setup, or for commuting with my very old but extremely reliable Panasonic CD player. Mainly I would use them for taking the train back and forth to classes and for working in libraries, crowded spaces, etc. I really want something sealed because 1) when I'm working I hate ambient noise but I can totally disappear into music, and 2) I can't stand the idea of pissing off everyone around me with open cans; I hear guys who do that on the train all the time and instinctively want to throttle them.

I currently own Sony MDR-V300, which I've seen a lot of folks pan. IMO, they're not great, but they're a big step up from what I used before (serious music lover, not a headphone connoisseur). I'm not a huge fan of serious base, and only a smaller portion of my collection needs serious base. I have a 12 inch sub under my desk and it never gets turned up beyond about 20%, let's put it that way; I tend to only use the bass boost on my CD player when there's other low-freq sound around that's bugging me.

Most of the music I listen to is jazz, electronic, electronic jazz, lots of world music. I like eclectic stuff and have a pretty diverse collection that includes just about every genre known to man. I really find that most systems I've heard either don't have a clear enough high-end or, more commonly, have a muddled mid-range. My V300s have a muddy bass that I don't particularly like, but what I really look for in sound is ultra clear mids so that I can pick out all the various instruments, especially in music where there are 7 or 8 different peformers going at once, all of whom deserve equal attention.

I'm looking at spending around US$100 and so far, based on my reading, my front runners are Shure E2c's, Ety ER6i's, or Senn HD 280's. The only problem is that I think I will have trouble finding at least two of these where I live (I know there is at least one Senn dealer here) and I've never heard any of these things. I've also never used in-ear phones, so I don't know if that would be a major comfort issue for me or not.

Anyway, recommendations would be appreciated.
