Cheap fosterfone, or at least cheap headband arc to install pucks into:

DealExtreme: $8.87 Dicsong Trendy Operator's Stereo Headset with Volume Control (3.5mm Jack/190cm Cable)

Possibly, anyway.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Looks promising..

My only concern is whether the earcups are parallel or pivot.
They don't look like the pivot. They might not be parallel though.

There are a few other interesting pages there too, like this YH5M page:
YH-5M

EDIT: Forgot to post the index page there: YAMAHA
Good find. I need to save this page before it goes kaput.

Had a friend over to rate my orthos with their current damping:
1- YHD2 ( stock, no damping )
2- HP50 ( euro yammy damping )
3- HOK80-2 (euro yammy damping)
4- Grundig 224 ( synthetic fabric damping )

In case anyone wonders, yes, a week on a bowling ball does take the clamp out of an ATH-1.

Good sounding when damped with dense felt, but oddly less sensitive than 32ohm SFIs.

on the topic of the 32 ohm sfi drivers, does anybody else need a significantly higher gain to make the sfi drivers as loud as other 'phones with a lower gain?
yes, they are not very efficient and that in itself is an understatement ..dB
post #9566 of 19957
highly dampened needs alot more drive, but well worth it.

was just brought to my attention that all the "black" heat shrink tubing I have is really actually a grey color. and its all from different sources.....why is that?

is it not possible to get actual deep black shrink tubing that matches my black nylon multifilament sleeving?

Well ortho freaks, I've got a little question for you.
These sfi drivers look exciting and I'm thinking about having a go myself.
What I'm wondering about is if my not-so-good-sounding but quite good-looking Pioneeer SE-305 could be used without messing them too much up aesthetically?

My personal opinion:

Those suckers are WAY WAY too big for SFI's. you want as little space behind the driver as possible.

The baffle for those fits 45mm not 38/40mm, so you would have to secure it in place of your own means.

And no the dampening materials that are in it now are definitely not sufficient.

Conclusion: if you secure it into the baffle, drill a hole for dual entry into the other cup, and change the damping scheme, it will still not sound very good due to way too much space/open air behind the driver.
