Not commenting on your post but, what the hell! you're in Bellingham?! figure the odds, two ortho lovers in the same city!(and a not very large one at that!)

The phones are heavy enough that some clamping force gives me the comfort and security of knowing that it'll stay on my head even if i move around a bit.

Off topic, but I need some recommendations for RCAs for ICs. I'd like to shoot for $15/pr or so, absolute upper max is $25/pr since I have to buy (5) pairs (one for a TT) and I still need to order some FE107Es and FE127Es. Oh, while I'm OT, I have one more receptacle to wire, then tie into the main circuits and everything in the shop area is live.

Plus a rather heavy box showed up with (40) SFI drivers in it earlier this week. Not sure what I'll do with them all, but I'm sure I'll figure something out...

I need to keep up with this thread more, I been slacking and preoccupied with too many other things lately. I got so much to do and work is getting hectic and wifey want me to do stuff around the house... bleh, oh for a quiet life in which to enjoy the orthos.

Ran into this and figured it was worth posting:

There are a number of items that one can listen for in the music that indicate RF noise
and intermodulation distortion in the system:

Veiling, artificial airiness, blurring, softening, homogenization of the sound. These may
give a sense of increased space and detail but do not actually increase the amount of
information.

Lack of dead quiet background and loss of the room ambiance of the recording space.

Instruments not well separated and distinct from each other and in their own sound
space.

“Congestion” in complex music such as orchestral and choral.

Thinness or lack of richness (lack of reproducing all the harmonics of instruments).

Chords sounding “sour” or nonmusical.

Differences in energy or dynamics at different areas in the audio frequency range. This
can make certain frequency ranges sound louder or more forward or hard.

Certain notes being bright or “jumping out” (forward towards the listener).

Loud passages or voice sibilants jumping out or distorting or “overloading.”

The top edge of horns smearing or “tearing” or “breaking up” or “turning to hash” or
getting sharp or overly edgy.

Complex voices, such as Shirley Horn and Thomas Hampson, sounding mechanical and
hard instead of warm and powerful especially when singing loudly.
