Not that it matters, but I think that's more likely a T20v2 she's wearing.
Hahhaha..I use her CD as reference too..I was seen running around RMAF 2008 with her CD in hand. Fantastic recording.

She did release a new CD late last year like in December.

Very cool .. I have heard Don's Hp3..they were sounding pretty close to the Hp50A..but I thought the 50A was having slightly better controlled bass and resolving highs.

Strange, as both kabeer and I agree that our hp3 (1 kabeer's, 2 mines) go deeper, have more separation, and clearer highs than our hp50 (1 mine, 2 kabeer's).

maybe I am confused..I tried them on both one after the other. one of them definitely felt like it had a less controlled bass and highs were not clear compared to the other

Don does not have a HP-3 . Pretty sure its a YH-3
Also, all the magic is in the damping.
I think it probably worth it to hear this set to listen for good damping. Even for a lot of you regulars.

I finally got around to working on the YH-100 again. My thick felt is about 1/8" thick which is about what I needed to raise the stock felt to completely damp the vents. I cut a piece a little bigger than the bottom of the cup, cut slits to fit around the pins and stuffed it in under the stock felt. Interestingly, with the vents completely damped, the bass was lowered. It dropped the the bass hump is now between 250-400Hz instead of 100-450Hz with the vents partially undamped.

To answer wautla's question about does the HP-1 and the YH-100 sound the same other than the bass, I'd have to say yes. I played some music that had no bass switching between the two and they sounded identical.

The YH-100 clamps a little harder, which may be part of the bass increase as well. They clamp hard enough that my ears get sore after a hour or so. I can use the HP-1 all day without a problem.

As I'm typing, contrabassoon music came up on random play. It's ear shaking, but doesn't overwhelm the piano accompaniment at all.

How is it damped?

FV? He is still around, just got tired of headphone upgrades and with Lambda and PMB500 he is very happy and has no need to "upgrade" anymore.

I miss his contributions to this thread as he was a cool guy and had a lot of good ideas.

I'm tired of upgrading, too, but I still buy stuff every now and then, usually because I feel like I can't afford not to. And just because he doesn't want to upgrade doesn't mean he can't post. I agree, he is a cool guy with a lot to contribute. FV, if you're reading this, we want you back! I even bought a Superex PEP-74 based on your and spritzer's good words about it.

While I haven't gotten a chance to hear the hp-1 to compare to my yh-100, I can vouch for the clamping force of the yh-100s. They are pretty severe. I ended up just taking the drivers and throwing them into some donor cans until I decided that partially damped vented enclosures sound better than heavily damped open enclosures.

I hope so too, but I fear the Grundig and HOK (once the secret trapdoor is opened) are the open-back exceptions to the vented-closed-back rule.

RE: my YHD-2 and its crummy sound: it's possible that a crumb or two of rotted foam crept into my 2's drivers, just as with ericj's HP-2s. On the other hand, once they were transplanted, they sounded fine. Go figure..

That's the spirit!

RE: the YH-100 clampiness: Has anyone tried gently bending the headband backwards ever so slightly?

And yes, Prof. FV, please come back, if only to tell us about turn of the century German architects. We'll be good!
