the SFI is an awesome driver if used correctly, but awful in the wrong headphone.
i have not seen the 701s in real life, but judging from pictures i suspect them to be a bad match, as the interior volume of the cups seem to large, and the sfi needs an air tight-seal; meaning leather/pleather or human flesh pads.

if you have the power of craftsmanship, try making some wooden pucks; if not, find someone who can.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Fostex T50RP Closed Ear Stereo Headphones

Hi,

can a Fostex T20v2 be well-driven out of a CDP headphone socket ?
I mean: no iPod nor PCDP, but no headphone dedicated amp.

thanks, cheers

This picture gives a good visual of the size:

Assuming it is around 40mm it should fit nicely.

the driver would fit, but you would have to seal the baffle (that huge white grille), and probably reduce the volume of the cup surrounding the driver, similar to what i had to do with the rphtx7-sfi, using bitumen or whatever.

you also need to replace the velour on the pads with leather, and make some supra pads to fit inside the circum-pads (you could use memory foam, or weatherstripping like smeggy)

She's past that phase (21) actually, but she's still a girl and as such will hardly understand that earphones don't get much better than the AKG K312 she has already, especially for low price.

She wanted my CD3000 a couple of months ago, before hearing how much they are worth.

actually, i believe it is 42mm(44?).
at least i know that i had to widen the 40mm baffle i had...
i c, so 40mm baffle probably won't enough for the SFI's ?

I tried to build an SFI frankenphone using a K500 chassis for the build (very similar to the K701 for all practical purposes).

It was completely unworkable.

Go for a Goldring DR-50 instead.

Hey Doug,
How much amplification do your modded AMT need? Would they be driven by comparable to the GS-1, or are they power monsters like the K1000?

Sorry for hi-jacking the tread.
You're looking at 3 watts of good speaker amp power as a basic guide. Mine now need a little more since I rebuilt the drivers because the magnets are now marginally further from the diaphragm which decreases sensitivity. This was an unfortunate necessity.

Think K1000 type amps. You need a very very low noise floor on the amp though, these will pick up all sorts of mechanical noise and hum which you just wont hear on a K1000.

Oki. Thanks for the info. What aspects of this headphone make you prefer it over the Omega 2 or K1000? Do the modded AMT share any similarities with the sound signature of either?

Was thinking a 240 if the 701s didn't work.

still a bad idea, imho, for all the same reasons.

K141 as well?
Bummer... find AKG designs to be rather comfy...

The chocolate donuts were made from 770s right?
well, there are different reasons why the k141/k240 frame is difficult. like the sfi driver not fitting under the swivel joint.

Ehm, I have just become a proud Yamaha freak and HP-3 owner.
