You nailed it then because mine are flat to 20Hz.

Seems that they did not screw up. Looks like there were two versions of HP-50 mono and stereo. This makes it even more confusing since we have this lineup of related models now:

HP-3 Stereo (dual entry cable)
YH-3 Stereo (dual entry cable)
HP-50 Mono (dual entry cable)
HP-50 Stereo (dual entry cable)
HP-50a Mono (single entry coiled cable, vinyl headband)
HP-50s Stereo (single entry coiled cable, vinyl headband)

neoTT, thanks for adding all that cool info to the wiki. Especially for all the hard to find Toshiba and ATH headphones.

Wow thanks. If it sounds as good as it looks it should be a killer.

Just received my pair of Yamaha HP-2...stock form is not impressive but the ortho signature is there..the fast transients and the detials in the highs..besides am currently not using an amp and driving it straight out of my iMac at work..will tinker around with it when I get home tonight..any recommended dampening schemes?

If, the mini3 can drive this after mods, this should be a great portable headphone
@Wualta- yes, this is the crumpled one from WA that sold last week on ebay.

I like that copper cladding... methinks my Beta 22 is going to get a nice bit of copper cladding inside with some nice LEDs and mesh top with wood trim. Should look spectacular in low light

Pimpin' my ride!!

Nope, they're basically little HP-1s. Bog standard HP-1 damping should do it. Watch out for deteriorating black foam, though. You may need something thin to scrape the stuff off the magnets and cups.

And that's easily fixed, though not without cosmetic deficit. It's the only way to get an ortho for a reasonable price these days.

F2D: Wow, mono and stereo versions of the same phone without a change of model number or even subtitle! Do the boxes say "HP-50 Mono" or "HP-50 Stereo" or otherwise give a clue other than the 150-ohm / 300-ohm telltale?

Either way, thanks for putting my paranoia to rest.

Well..that's another ortho added to my pile..most I paid yet for an ortho...
I think will call it a day now, unless a Yh-1000 comes along.
Don't really know if the price was worth it though.

However, I must admit...I terribly liked what I heard when Don brought his over

Wow, 105£ is a bit steep for a pair of HP50A. They look in nice condition though.
Well you payed about 8 times what I payed for my first pair, and about 4 times what I payed for my second. But its good.
Good luck recabling and damping it now
But if you get it damped at a certain point they will be good.
The only problem with all the 3/50 series is that its about an 80% chance the driver will sound different from any next pair you hear.

yeah..either way, i guess its my way of paying for the ortho madness after procuring a YH-100 for 35$. So right now, am not yet i the red. The HD580 and DT770 that I sold off basically financed my T50RPs, HP2 and HP-50A..not bad at all. I am loving the ortho sound..

I finally found a leather punch at a local craft store so I can mod the dampening on my YH-3s. Will reflowing the solder on the stock cable make much improvement in the SQ? I plan to polish the jack pin for now, but I need to order the Mogami to make a cable for the YH-3s, two Grados, and at least three sets of SFIs.
