Orthodynamic Roundup - Page 344

I just did what all of the ortho thread sr. members told us not to do

I got myself a brand new Fostex T50RP. It should be here in a few days. It is not that I do not trust the opinions of ortho elders, on contraire they are my guiding light so to say, but from past experiences my opinions on what sounds good seem to be somewhat different. I guess I have strange ears or perception or god knows what else.

So I figure I have to try these out as they are TOTL Fostex at the moments and for $50 they seem like a good deal. They should be also easy to modify as they open up easy, hmmm that came out kinda strange.

P.S. I also just sold my Pro 30 as I figured someone will enjoy them more than I do So you can sign me up for "did not like Pro 30 and ATH-2, but loves YHD-1 and T20RP" club.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

i agree that the t-50RP cant be given up on yet, so thanks for taking one for the team

in the worst case scenario that they do turn out to be carp, you could probably send them to smeggy for some over the top modifications

So I found the memory card reader in the sun room...

A pic of the box next to the vintage Yamaha receiver:

And next to my K601s, which makes the K601s look huge:

Wow those are in amazing condition! I hope the pads on my HP-3 are like that!!
Yep they do look in good condition. I like the HP-3 design.

The HP-3 et seq pads are a little chubby for my tastes, but perhaps they made 'em that way to counteract expected bassiness. Hmmm..

But yeah, that HP-3 looks to be in top shape. Ya done good.

Impedance testing

Calling all HP-3/YH-3/HP-50/a/s owners
Ok guys, Ludoo and I need a little help compiling differences on the HP-3 variants.

Im using a multimeter on 2k ohm mode btw....dunno how reliable it is..).

So onto the main point, we need help from anyone with a HP-3 variant (YH-3, HP-50/a/s) to take impedance readings from their headphones.
EDIT: Results so far posted below

The left driver is read connecting the multimeter to Sleeve/Tip, and right from Sleeve/Ring. See terminology here.

================================================== =
My results:
Non bassy HP-50: L:124 R:123
Bassy HP-50S: L:153 R:149

Wualta's results:
Non-bassy HP-3: L: 149.3 R: 143.3

BoilermakerFan's results:
Bassy YH-3: L: 135.4 R: 134.2

dBel84's results:
Bassy HP-50A??: L=127ohm R=133ohm

Ludoo's results:
My bassy HP-3: 129.6 (left) 133.8 (right)
His bassy HP-3: 140.4 (left) 130.6 (right)
T's ? HP-3 133.4 (l) 130.4 (r)

1st YH100: 134.9 (l) 142.9 (r)
2nd YH100: 122.2 (l) 124.1 (r)
Strangley both YH-100 sound identical but the impedance are different....any ideas?
================================================== ==

Thanks in advance!

(Inspired by Wualta, today I started testing impedance of my orthos.
For his wiki's sake here is my result for the untill now unknown Technics EAH-810: Left: 70 Ohm Right: 69 Ohm)

As long as you did it with full knowledge of what'll be required to make them into something useful. I salute you for going where no one, to our collective knowledge, has gone before. What are your plans for the little 35mm driver, if I might ask?

Nah, you just need things to sound not-SFI. Maybe your ears are very highly tuned and you can't tolerate nonflat response, which means you have a bright future ahead of you in audio recording or maybe just vetting various modded headphones HFers send you ("Is this good?" "Naw, it shtinks!")

Can do, but my nice Sears DMM crapped out(bad switch? If I beat it enough it will come one and the batts are good) so I just have an el-cheapo for now...

I'll edit this post the numbers, so come back and check it ok?

EDIT:

Left: 135.4
Right: 134.2

Nice and closely matched too!

Thanks! , the YH-3 is the only one we do not have in our possesion.

But readings from other variant owners would be great as well to see if things are consistant.

Ok, just got the word, they are apparently quite firm, and not very cushiony.

Oh well. The hunt continues for squishy, smooth pads that seal properly. I had a feeling that would be the case from the HD 280 pads I bought.

Thanks for asking though.

So, would denser closed cell foam with a thin memory foam layer over that with leather over everything be good or bad? I was think 4-5mm of denser foam with 4mm memory foam or 6-7mm of denser foam with 5-7mm memory foam. That would give a little and kind of contour to your ear, then when you take them off they would expand back to flat for a new, proper seal the next time.

Those Koss R/10 pads are definitely soft, but I don't know how easy they would be to wrap in leather after the crappy thin vinyl peels off.

The other great thing about the kangaroo hide is that it is so soft and so strong. That's why it's used in soccer shoes.

I tried to resist this madness, I really did! Now I just enjoy it.

BMF , hopping mad by the sounds of it . That kangaroo leather sounds just the stuff we have been looking for. I have been scouring local stores for a while looking for an appropriate material. I too was thinking some form of layered memory foam, it should be real simple to sew up flat pads. I was also thinking of a slight wedge thicker in the centre and thinner on the outside ( I guess this depends on individual shape of ears ) but I find a little extra padding on the inner canthus a little more comfortable.

This is probably not what anyone wants to think about but the flat pads on my AT-SFI's work a little better after they have been on for a while - the build up of moisture creates a better seal. I believe that a memory foam and soft leather will work more efficiently.

Statistics for K&L, our H-3 test team -> L=127ohm R=133ohm

an option for cabling which I have found to be very good - shielded 3 core guitar cable = silver plated copper with teflon insulation , it's cheap and you can split the ground at the Y if dual entry and not bother for single entry. ( perhaps not as easy to find as I did - I picked up 15feet from navships but I don't see any listed at the moment)
