Orthodynamic Roundup - Page 190

I was just joking because now I'm tempted to spend more money on drivers when I haven't done anything with the ones I already have. The SFI drivers should be able to produce bass. The nearly identical drivers in my ATH-2 produces nice bass. There are other things wrong with it, namely the baffle, but for me bass isn't a problem. It may be if you're a bass head, which I'm not.

The Pro 30s have a similar driver as well and I've not heard complaints about their bass.

I can't imagine the bidding war if a HP-1000 shows up. Not only will people here want it, but since it probably amongst the rarest of Yamahas, Yamaha collectors will want it as well. And then there's WertherDVX. He's another with an T50v1. I'd be curious which headphones the actively uses.

BTW, I was looking at his profile and was amazed that I have a headphone that he doesn't have. Then I realized it's just because it's an electret which he doesn't collect. I'd love to see his collection.

We've seen HP/YH-1000 show up, but there is never a bidding war.

Usually within 24 hours of posting to ebay, it just mysteriously gets removed. Probably because of a behind-the-scenes email deal.

Eric, you use velours on your yh1 right? Do they leak bass?

That link's askew. Here's ericj's original listing:

and here's my version of eric's list, with added bla bla:

The service manual, which covers both models, leads me to believe they're identical, just different model numbers for different markets.

HFer swt61 used to own a YH-1000, and a couple of short-lived members popped up momentarily on their way to somewhere else (eBay ?) to say they owned YH-1000s, but nobody currently on HF has both a Fostex T50v1 and a YH-1000, so we only suspect the YH-1000 is on the same level of goodness. If it isn't, it's probably close enough.

Be sure to read our Polish orthobrother/architect Tomek W.'s posts about his YH-1000 and dig the excellently-lit photos he gave us. He also owns a YH-100 and compares the two, but his mods are different from ours, so it's difficult to compare.

No, I do not. My YH-1 has the factory pads, as does my YH-3 and my YH-100.

My YH-2 has Sony MDR-V150 pads, which are a little taller than the factory pads, but the factory pads were shot to heck and offered no padding at all. A folded kleenex would have been more comfortable. The Sony pads may make the YH-2 sound a little more lackluster than usual. Or they may make it sound just as lackluster as it usually does. (I have hard feelings toward the YH-2, even after the success of yamakoax. Which needs to be revisited and tweaked.)

I briefly had HD25 velours on my HOK80-2, and they leaked bass like a sieve. and the HOK doesn't really have any to spare in the first place. So i put Sony pads on the HOK80-2 as well. Every HOK in the world needs new pads because the original pads were very shoddy.

There are ebay vendors who sell generic pleathers that probably fit a YH-1, but they probably aren't an upgrade.

I should go back and edit my list. in retrospect i was unfair in a few spots.

Edit: and, no takers for that HP-3 on ebay? I guess it was foolish of the seller to start the bidding at $20, which is where it was likely to end if it had started at $1. Perhaps it will get relisted.

Too bad about the earpads, my ears hurt all over after I take the headphones off. I guess that could be the clamping force, but there's no way to fix that is there?

I really wish there was a head-fi wiki to compile all the great info from this and the Stax thread.

HP-3? How did I miss that

I can't even find the auction now, my ebay trolling needs some work.

You took the words right out of my mouth! Whoever's selling an HP-3 has hid them well. Not well enough to hide them from ericj, of course.

But that's all right. I'm holding out for a YHD-3.

Have you tried carefully bending the steel arch on your YH-1 backwards a little bit? I've never needed to on mine, but it's a pretty common problem.

I'll look into these Yammies a bit closer one of these days. They seem interesting if I can get a decent set cheap enough. In the meantime I'll carry on playing with the SFI drivers.

I think I've figured out what I feel is the optimal dual driver config. It has a relatively small cavity and allows plenty of bass, even circumaural. The problem before was too much distance from the ear and too big a cavity volume. I've reduced both a great deal with the new design. It's a much smaller mount, very light and comfortable to boot. The weight is nearly all driver now.

Once I fully nail down the design I think they'll be pretty nice sounding. I did a quick rough out to test the theory and it seems a success. Here's what it looks like without drivers or pads. I'll wait until I get the new drivers from ericj before doing the full monty but it seems good so far testing with my old batch. I'll probably use a Stax Gamma headband and pads to keep them comfy.

The enclosures look beautiful. I should really start learning how to make wooden earcups. Do you think I have any chance without special tools? I only have a dremel, and buying a lathe or vertical drill seems a bit overkill to make a couple of headphones a year...

Edit: how do you plan to fix the drivers in place?

It's way too much like hard work without a decent set of (power) tools. Besides, it only looks good because the photos don't show clearly what a quick hack up they are it's very rough as I was just testing the concept and initial design.

I plan on gluing the drivers in place. Once it's tested and sounds how I want I'll fix them in permanently. I still have to work out the backs to allow for felt, wiring etc. I need to find some small cages.

once i get some more funds, im definitely making some dual driver sfi floats.
do you think different damping on each driver would work well with the sfi´s, with one taking care of the highs, and the other the lows; as it works great on the pmb85?

YAMAHA HP3 - eBay (item 250253687192 end time Jun-05-08 21:41:29 PDT)

As usual I'd worked under the impression that most of y'all had already spotted them.
That's a pretty well hidden auction unless you have a specific search for HP-3, or a generic search for anything Yamaha. The word headphone is no where in the listing and it's in the Music - Accessories category. Not exactly where I look for headphones.

Ya me neither, though I will now.
