You just need to make sure there are no breaks in the sticky tape ring, as you want to create a good seal with the HP1, so no way of air to escape.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Yamaha Stereo Headphones
Fostex T50RP Closed Ear Stereo Headphones

Wide double sided tape is often marketed as carpet tape. Might be worth a look.

Yeah, I'd want to use one piece of tape for that purpose, so that it's easier to work with. That and so that there won't be any overlaps of the tape. (Actually, come to think of it it shouldn't be that much of a problem.) The pads I bought off ebay are thin, and it turns out that the seller sold me different pads; I bought 2 pairs of these things, and he gave 3 pads of a type, and 1 pad with a different construction, its slightly larger too. I might have to find someone to make these for me locally now. Anyways, since they are thin, I don't know if escaping air would matter as much...

Thanks, I'll look into it.

Regarding the soundstaging in these 'phones, one big problem is the tradeoff with bass. A thought I had today was to stick a small driver (dynamic or otherwise) wired in serial or parellel on either the back of the cup, directly behind the damped driver, or on the back of the baffle.

My thought is that this would create a slightly delayed and dispersed sound-wave, that might also serve to cancel out some of the bass-range in the backwave.

I broke my soldering iron and I have two tests coming up, so I can't try it atm, but has this been discussed before?

Yeah, discussed a while back but like many experiments, never made it to fruition for whatever reason. I was going to try it myself. Isobaric isodynamic. There are good reasons to try it and probably bad effects as well, like cancellation and combing but it never hurts to try

Cautions noted, and I look forward to getting to it. The thought was originally to put earbuds underneath the pads, but I figured that their sensitivity might be too high.

I look forward to running the experiments.

Hi people ,

Today I recabled my Yamaha HP-2 with some spare mogami cable I had leftover from recabling of my dynamic cans (D1001 & DT880).
I have never believed in cables & my previous experiments (did them only because I needed longer cable ) also fortified my belief.

However, the HP-2 cable looked quite worn out & since I had the left over cable, I went ahead with the recable.

I must say I am having hard time believing the changes brought forth by this recable, the treble is now butter smooth , that congested feeling is gone & these sound much more open now. The separation is much better now & in this regard these beat my T20v2 now while having a similar overall balance. An unforeseen change in hierarchy !

May be the poor old stock cable had rusted or something. I guess a recable of T20 is now in order, which have a good condition stock cable, only then might I be able to make a final call as to which side of the cable debate would my position be.

I recabled my Fostex T20v2's just to get rid of the three inch plug + adapter stick. While I was at it, I decided to bypass the jack on the headphones, and do a dual entry. Instead of drilling a hole, I ran the cable in through the vents and just used a strain-relief anchored to the earcup ball-joint. It sounds excellent, but my choice of materials made the cord quite stiff.

I've been told that I'm weird, but I get a crossfeed/crosstalk effect from the stock cable->jack vs the dual entry with mogami. Does anyone else get that?
I am still counting on the oxidation/corrosion theory to account for the cable differences.

I don't hear any crosstalk with my T20v2, will be recabling it soon though just to satiate my curiosity.

Well, I use them from my laptop mostly (via cheapy HotAudio DAC), and when I change the "balance" to all the way left, I'll still get a bit of the left channel playing in the right ear. The same goes for my MDR-V6 and PMX-100, but after the recable I don't get that anymore.

No such issue here on my setup.

Yup posts of our shock were in the YH-100 thread . It's a nice headphone but that was a bit out there!

Strangely the YH-100 seems to be the only Yamaha series not represented in my collection any more..
