Oh, *Those* phones!

I was gonna buy a set myself to play with but $70 is almost the same as the T50... ack!!

But it does look good in there and if they sound even better, much goodness!

Nice going Don.

Don, what made you decide to go closed-back with the Wharfedale driver?
ya, why no open woodies?

I haven't seen anyone try a custom open woody. Why is that?
It would have been the first thing I would have tried if I was to go woody.

I was given these cups by a fellow Oregonian to see if I could make em work. and work they do

It was not a conscious decision at first but it seemed to be an experiment waiting to happen. I had been playing with the cups earlier in the morning, the SFI drivers are too small and needed a baffle adapter. The telefunken was my initial choice but it is sounding just so good that it would have been very hard for me to pull it apart. The wharfdale was not well, there was some funky resonance that needed looked at and while opening the cups to pull the drivers, I was overtaken by gremlins. Add to this that I cannot really listen to open phones , making a closed wharfdale was a logical step.

Very cool indeed, Don.

Personally, I have little use for open phones these days so I haven't really put much effort into them but I do plan to make a set of open T50s. So we'll see how that goes.

You found my lovely Smegma Pro (woodied Gamma Pro) that Smeggy built for me. I was actually listening to those last night, as they are a better match for my Sennheiser HEV70 amp than my HE60 (which I keep in the main rig with WES). The loaner eXStatA I have is on the fritz and the HEV70 had to be pulled out of mothballs for my bedroom rig until my eXStatA(s) are completed. This one is every bit as beautiful and good sounding as my HE-5 orthos, even if it is just a silly stat and posted in the wrong thread.

Well, after months of cowardice, ocassionally poking around the edges of my HP-50S I finally worked out how to open them and have got the ball rolling. The improvement is astonishing.

My HP-50S, stock, had almost no treble and the bass was pretty clunky, the whole sound was congested and quite muffled to my ear, except in the mid bass and bass.

The first thing I did in line with the guide I found by luddo, was to fill the cavity in the back of the cup with cotton wool. The felt I had was nowhere near as thick as that shown in the guide, but I started with just one layer to start with in each cup. I didn't cut holes for the pegs and still haven't, will get around to that when I've finalised the process. Put the foam back in and closed them up. Instantly the change was immense - the treble and mids were back and the phones, even with this small change were a perfectly respectable and listenable set of phones.

I still felt like the treble could benefit from being bought further forward though so I put another layer of the same felt in each and this seemed about right for me. Still lots of bass but much more of an even sound. It still seemed to be muffled. I opened them up again and tried removing the white filters behind the baffles. That did the trick. Perhaps a bit too much as they were now edging away from the smoothness I quite liked about their sound so far. So I replaced them with circles of j-cloth (kitchen felt) the same size. Much better, now they had clarity with a warm edge.

I liked this balance but still felt it was missing something. Didn't really know what to try but remembered Lecky suggesting micropore on the back on the driver. Others had advised against this for these particular phones but I wanted to give it a try. I covered two thirds of the holes on the back of each driver with the micropore and tried again. Fantastic. It works really well for my personal tastes, seems to bring drums and details at the top of the spectrum further forward.

What next. Well I'd been enjoying a layer of j-cloth/kitchen felt actually in front of the baffle with my MS2i recently so thought I'd give it a go. Liked it. Then tried it behind the baffle as a second layer to the j-cloth filter. Nope. A bit muffled again. Then tried it bare again. Then with the j-cloth up front again... hmmm... still not sure which I prefer. More clarity without it, more smooth without it. No need to make my mind up now. For now I'm going without the cloth but could change my mind again, both are really nice.

With just one session and less than ten opens and closes I've improved these phones immeasurably (to my ear) and am having a great experience listening to Joanna Newsom's Have One On Me as I type. It's not over yet, I'm sure I'm going to change my mind on everything again, and definitely want to have an evening trying different amounts and configurations of micropore to perfect that as I feel a little less might be better, but for a week at least I'm just going to enjoy my new phones.

Hey Steff/EddieE, sounds like you've been having fun. I look forward to hearing the results of your work some time. I've been working on my new Fostex T50RPs today and while I'm at it, reworking the T20v2s with less damping. Both are sounding really nice, the T20s still a bit trebly but with more mid and bass to go with it, the T50rp with a gentler balance, probably more to Kabeer's taste I suspect. My wife's in Japan now and she's getting some SR-007 pads for me... Little by little it's coming together.

Now I need to get back to those Technics EAH-810s...
Hey Lecky, yeah it is a lot of fun, I don't know why I avoided it for so long (yeah I do; I'm a DIY coward ;-)

Lost out on some Technics EAH-810s at the last ten seconds on ebay the other day, would like to hear what I missed And if you can get your two Fostex sounding any better than the ones you had at the meet they would be mind blowing.

Perhaps time to look at another London meet in the next few months.
Was probably the EAH-810 that I got nearly a week ago? I just had another go at tuning it. It's pretty good, I'm getting closer.

The T20v2 as you heard them were airy for a pretty much closed can, and had a nice sense of transparency at the expense of balance, they're just tipped a bit more towards balance now. It's quite possible that you'd like them more as they were but I like them more now.

When Kabeer's freer we should do a little London ortho meet at least. Something more is welcome of course.
Haha! I was pretty sure it must have been a head-fier who won them, well glad they went to a good home. I need to improve my bidding strategy on ebay and do more late swooping myself.

Would be up for a little London ortho meet if the two of you are.
