Since I have the front magnet in the T20 taken out now, I am thinking about cutting the plastic part with holes in front of the driver out too. Does this part serve any purpose that would effect the sound in a negative manner(if I take it out)? I planned on just cutting a paper clip up and putting 3-4 "safety bars" in the space just so there would be no way for an ear to accidentally slip inside with all the power it sucks up now.

I'd be more worried about accidental damage to the driver diaphragm. IMHO, not worth risking your driver to that kind of exposure.

Just make sure you replace the mesh fabric that keeps crud out of the driver.

What about just the very center that is solid plastic in the middle of the holes? Is there any advantage to doing something like that or does it not matter with these drivers? Where can I buy a sheet of mesh fabric to put across there? Sorry I'm new to ortho's.

Something like this?

Speaker Grill Cloth Fabric
I like the idea about removing the grill if you want the full realization of getting stuff out of the way of your driver. You could use speaker grill cloth.

My Yamaha HP50S just arrived! Now just the long wait to get home and try them out!

I’m actually quite surprised by what good condition these are in for pretty old headphones. Some tiny amount of wear and tear when you look close but at a glance they look almost brand new. My guess is they were worn a few times, put in the box and then in the cupboard and forgotten about. Even the cardboard box is in near perfect condition (no plastic mould in it though – just bubble wrap). … just hope they work now!

Anyone interested in any of the following articles from a Magazine?

turntable survey examined
akg k141
beyer et1000

I want just the PWB one, but the magazine costs £5.80, if a handful of people are interested and would pay like 50p or £1 each for an article they want I could buy it and send you the relevant scans .

Thanks

EDIT:
Boilermakerfan in for "dummy head recording"
Saachi in for "leak 3000 and dummy recording"

OT, but still planar...

My Technics EAH-80As showed up today. They are brushed aluminum back cups! The pics all make them look like plastic, but they aren't.

That's the cool news. Bad news is, they smell like strip club bar without the lingering perfume, just rank, stale smoke and cigar stench. The cans are now in purgatory, being deodorized by activated charcoal in their shipping box. Hopefully there is enough odor removing power left in that charcoal as I used it to absorb the VOCs coming off all the E-P iron I ordered recently. If not, I'll have to change it out and let it go a few more days.

Can't wait to open them up and see what drivers are in them. Pics and listening impressions once they are deodorized.

Never heard about the 80A before. The plain old EAH-80 is supposedly an electret. Does it look different on the outside?
Pictures would be nice!
