You have a YHD1 right? Pretty much same except a stronger magnet. The YHD series are curious, as they visually look like SFI's but have a more 'Yamaha' sound. There must be something specific Yamaha do.

I've never disassembled my YHD1 because the stock sound is adequate for me. I think that's the first picture I've seen of one disassembled.

Fostex T50RP - Mod #2

This is getting very close at this point. For this mod, I used a whole package of the Loctite Blu Tack, spreading it on the bottoms and sides of the cups to mass load them and dampen vibration. I also added a 38mm heavy felt disc to each one, floating on top of the small pad in the mid bottom of each cup. I then unraveled some cotton balls and filled the rest of the cup, not too tight.

I am beginning to find myself reaching for these instead of my K501s at this point and not really missing the 501's. That is a good sign, although as a counterpoint, once I listen to the 501's I am still hooked to them. Overall, the K501s are more neutral and the soundstage is more open with a more 3d feel and more air. The T50s have more weight to the sound and the mids are now almost completely tamed and sound great, but not quite as good as the 501's. The bottom end is where the T50s shine - it is now deep and tight. The high end is a bit more rolled off on the T50's, but good. They handle pretty much any of the classical, solo and rock stuff I am throwing at them.

These are working well as a semi closed phone, as not too much sound leaks out and their isolation is not bad. I will keep playing with them of course. It also looks like I am going to build a Cavalli EHHA early next year, so we will see how that changes the playing field. Thanks to all for the mod suggestions in this excellent thread. These phones are really a good value!

Could someone help me find leather/pleather ear pads which have 70mm outer diameter and around 40mm inner. Found something at Ebay but they didn't look so good but did understand AKG have some phones 70mm with ear pads so as JVC/Victor just need find those. Thanks!

Koss R10s or the Senn HD25 pads are the only ones I can think of that might be close to those measurements, but I no longer have either on hand.

Here's some pics of the Denon AHD6 ortho I got recently.

I made a few modifications that I'm not sure I would call mods. From the picture in the manual that was posted here it looks like they originally came with pads similar to the yh100 in design, but smaller of course. However, these apparently fell apart, and they came to me with radioshack type foamies. I replaced those with ksc75 pads and cut a hole in an extra set to try to seal in some of the bass without pushing the drivers too far away from the ear. I also stuffed some felt into the bottom side of the baffle, which helped a little more. They sound good, very detailed and airy, but a bit shrill in some frequencies and light sounding, so I think those original pads would sound much better with a better seal, cause right now the foamies let a lot of air out the sides. They definitely have bass though, it's just of the light akg variety. I'm not sure if there's dampening behind the drivers, but they seem to be at least partially open.

So what do you guys think? OEM or denon original?

Recently eh .
V.nice and clean photos. And it just goes to show another example that says "dynamic" on the outside, but has something alltogether more interesting on the inside ^_^.

I cant fully guess untill we see the drivers ! (hint hint)
By the styling I am going to guess a Yamaha OEM....
But the 'flat-foam' description makes me double-think.....

Try the R10 pads on them... Just fold the extra over the side and use a rubber band to seal it off for the time being. They make black bands too, just have to go in the girlie hair bits section.

Glad to hear the Ortho Magic is having its effect. Sounds like you've got the two 'phones close in overall sound, but with the Fostex tilted up at the bass end slightly and the K501 the opposite. With a little tweak the Fostex could flip and have an overall sound much like the K501's. And for not much money you have a headphone that can sound, within limits, pretty much the way you want it to. That's the Ortho Way.

I dunno. I gotta see that diaphragm. Any chance of going in for a macro shot?

Would that cover any part of the driver (that is not already covered by the baffle)? If the pads extend over the driver, you could loose treble / air, and they might end up sounding a bit closed-in. (I can't say for sure, because I don't know if your drivers sound exactly like mine.)

Is that the driver we are looking at or a baffle? If it's the driver then the magnet doesn't quite look like anything I seen before.
