EHHA or Stacker level of amplification makes a world of difference with orthos.
Yeah, EHHA effortlessly drove my K1000 and HD800 at RMAF. Bill loaned it to me to test out some more. I will have a Loaner SAC K1000 amp here next monday and I will compare them and either buy the SAC or get someone to build me an EHHA. A gentleman at RMAF who currently uses a Firstwatt F1 for his K1000 says that Bill's EHHA would come in second and his old SAC would come in third, as far as which is better for K1000.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Perhaps a detailed review on the EHHA, HPA style would be on the horizon soon

Possibly. My only pending review right now is the Head-direct.com RE252 earphones. But, I might review it more in the style of my mini-reviews rather than an epic novella. Like I said in the RMAF impressions thread the other day, this EHHA is not out of place next to amps in the $1000-2500 range (at least with K1000 and HD800).

As someone who's put his butt (ie, his low end) on the line in the sand by saying orthos could give the High End a run for its money, I'm a-keepin' my fingers crossed.

I mean the new ones better be miles better than my Wharfedale ID-1 or even the T10 I have here on loan to justify spending 10 times what these cost.

I just can't believe that Wharfedale had it right on the money back in 1972. How could these not be more popular, I wonder.

The T10 is such a unique sound, and everyone knows I'm it's number one fan, but I would hope the LCD-2 stomps it in the ground. I suspect it will and I'm confident enough to step over that line and throw my Dagger in the sand. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on a set of LCD-2s as I knew there was a reason I was saving the Madrone Burl and the Maple Burl blocks.

EDIT: As far as the popularity in 1972, uh, headphones are kind of a solitary deal while the popular activities at the time involved drugs and groups of people participating in an event that rhymed with Porgy.

Well as much as I love the T10, the modded LCD1 excelled on several fronts where it could not. It retains it's bass monster title however but given the lcd2 is supposed to have superb bass response, I suspect the lcd2 will be the next T50.

Let's hope they are. But there's always going to be a sweet spot, a peak in the bang/buck curve, somewhere between the $1 HOK-80-2 and the $650 LCD-2.

Er, well, there is that funny high-Q bass resonance. Does yours not have that? Aside from that, yes, it's surprisingly spot on. Makes you wonder why they abandoned that design for the ID 2.

Could you explain more? I hear no resonance in the bass nor any peaks

Uh, no, assuming I catch your drift. If you want to adjust the impedance the headphone sees, make yourself a simple resistor network and connect it to the speaker outs. Headphone Adaptor for Power Amplifiers

More power is always better, as long as it's clean and nothing else (noise floor, distortion, stability) is sacrificed for a good-looking power spec.

By the way: Have you seen a CR-620 in person?

The only Wharfey I've heard is Smeggy's. He did a mod on them that improved the bass, but we both heard that there was a still a big peak, and it was in the upper bass. Most music was very pleasant until something came along in this narrow band which excited the resonance.

If yours doesn't have that, no wonder Smeggy said yours was better. It would be interesting to know if he was able to have both yours and his apart to compare seals, construction, etc.

Sheesh, with all the talk of "giant killers" and "next T50", I'm gonna have to start saving money.

I can hear a hump in the upper bass frequencies..between 100-250 hZ..but no resonance.

Hump = Resonance, as a rule of thumb. Unless there's a gremlin inside the headphone with a bad graphic equalizer.
