hope you get the faulty driver issue sorted out

Gear mentioned in this thread:

yup, i hope so...i check it using multimeter both of the driver seems to be just fine, but there's no sound comes out from the other one...the other just normal & sound potentially...

Cool find, iQEM. Looks like Fostex weren't the only ones sharing their drivers.

ericj or whoever else has one, could you measure the space for the drivers inside the enclosures of your QP55x? I'm considering using one as a donor frame but need to know if my drivers will fit.

Yes, great find! What made you suspect it was an ortho?

Sure looks like a Yamaha driver. Looks like they hot-glued it in. And what's all that circuitry? passive EQ? yeah! This is gonna be verrrrry interesting.

Eagerly awaiting photos and results of testing after you get the cable repaired.

The yellow ones in the links make this the Msot Futurististic Sony Heaphone Evar.

That's one unexpected find of an ortho driver in a strange enclosure. Perhaps that volume control (?) (or is it an eq?) thing is what's faulty?

I hope you can get it playing

Amazing find, congrats iqem!! i wouldnt never have thought it was an ortho, with all those knobs on it.

Do you think this is an ortho?

The VSH-5 Vector scan is in the ortho list... but I have no idea how it appeared in it.

Pretty sure it's because someone here bought one - it's an ATH-2 with a different label iirc.
ath-2 has arrived.
i got this cheap enough that i am going to full-on mod it. point me to any ath-2 succesful mods plz!
The most important thing to do to the ath-2 is to cut the front grille open and let the driver breathe.

Those little holes are doing it no favors.

Yeah. Flush-mount that sucka. The baffle is too thick and too tiny-holed.

Doing this will destroy part of the 'phone's '70s funkah charm, but we're after good sound here.

Then we have to control the backwave, because the ATH-2 is one of the very few mostly-open-back orthos ever made.

So get routin'/drillin'/choppin' on that chromeplated baffle and we'll take it step by step.

any pics of these mods to help guide me? i'm pretty sure what to do on the front but not the back.
the treble on these is terrible, bass is decent, tho not as good as the pro 30

Tried the ath-2 with my xenos amp. much better! turns out the ld3 has little synergy with this old ortho. the highs are still recessed but the whole headphone came alive with the xenos amp

Scompton bought a VectorScan VSH5 back in May '08 and showed by photos that it was visually identical inside and out to an ATH-2, which he also owned. I think Scompton got farther than anyone in modding his, though I don't recall if he flush-mounted the driver. Why not PM him?

Meanwhile, here's a truncated thread describing the bare minimum mod (it leaves the stock baffle unmolested).

i dont know, my friend had spotted it on local antiques store...i guess he bought it for the branding reason, later i know it's an ortho from his pict on my local forum...he didn't know what to do with it, so i bought it from him...

yup, they hot glue the driver to the baffles...the circuit are for volume controller, treble & bass booster on each cup...and extra Mono-Stereo switch on the left cup...i dont know if it's work or not, too many cables inside...so i bypass the circuit, from cable directly to driver...

same as you do, but after seeing the drivers i'm very excited found a missing ortho from Sony...

for ATH-2 i put some nippon tapes (covering 3 holes) on the driver, covering 2 holes on inside of the baffles (near driver)...and lining the lining gap on baffles (open the earpads to see what i've meant) with nippon tapes...for the driver, maybe using 3M micropore surgical tape would bring more treble better than nippon tape...
