O maybe not with soft clipping on using Normal In rather than Lab In its sounding good so far (was using Lab In with soft clipping and was clipping, same with before on normal in without soft clipping on)

More I increase the volume on the pre-amp, the more the clipping disappears.....whats that mean?

it's the same condition when i paired my diyCans 120ohm/32ohm or even ATH-2 to starving student hybrid low gain...i guess it's related to power, no ?

low current, so perhaps a resistor network is in need. dBel84 did you ever figure out that info for me? or what can I use that I already have on hand? I dont need much resistance at all to be honest just needs to be able to turn up the volume on the pre-amp more.

If its still in mono, and the amp is weak, you shoudl still hear music, but you mgiht get lots of static or such. I did with one mono hp50a being used witha stereo adapter for testing.
If both drivers are making even noise, then the drivers are working, recable to stereo and see if it works. And tap any debris out of the drivers.

While I myself enjoy listening to a little "ngggunnng" before going to sleep, others may find it annoying.

This question had me stumped until Kabeer pointed out that your friends might be plugging a mono headphone into a stereo jack on the tape deck. If that's true, then you need to tell them that stereo and mono plugs and jacks aren't compatible-- the stereo channels aren't summed (L+R) into a mono plug. You get some difference signal (L-R), which probably explains the ngung. Unless you're plugging the 50A into a mono jack, it just won't work. Rewire for stereo at your earliest convenience.

As for the NAD, it isn't necessary to use a resistor network, and there's little danger (the headphone won't smoke unless you're playing it at earbleed levels), but it does cut down on residual amp noise and the amp is happier too. Take a look: Headphone Adaptor for Power Amplifiers

Headwize goes into perhaps too much detail, but it's hard to fault them for thoroughness: HeadWize - Headphone FAQs

Of course, you can usually pick up a good old Pioneer JB-21 cheaply on those pesky online auction sites.

seems wualta beat me to it. I was looking for specs on the 2200 and it seems to put out 500wpc? Rod Elliot's guide is the one I would follow if it were me. A brief search of the net seems to show that the output relays can be fussy and there were quite a few "i fried my tweeter" threads. Judicious use of that attenuator as wualta noted ..dB

I dont quite understand that schematic.....I'm supposed to hook the ground up to an earth ground?

what if I dont want to join the left and right channel grounds via TRS connector.....?
the diagram only shows a single channel and essentially shows a resistor divider network between the amp and the headphone. +ve amp out - resistor in series (with headphone +)- resistor in parallel (to ground out from amp .. -ve terminal) - resistor in series (with headphone + )

The other question I don't have time to address but it comes down to whether your amp is push pull , differential etc output or it has a common ground. If you don't know, it is safer to keep them seperate.

OHHHH the other ground up there is the speaker ground. I get it now.

I'm not sure either but I will keep it separate either way. damnit I dont have those resistors at 1 watts, only have 1/4 watts in those values.
I can leave out the actual switch though right? I have no intent on hooking speakers up to anything

dBel: if I did the 8ohms with 100ohms like you did, would 2W resistor for the 8ohms be sufficient? and 1/4W for the 100ohms?
yep, that would work well ..dB
