I suspect you're not gonna get much bass out of those because of the closed back magnet(at least I think they might be closed back I've been browsing orthodynamic tweeters on ebay and alot of them seem to have one magnet with a closed back and the back wave is probably bouncing off the magnet).

Audiocats >> if you want, we can try using my 55x baffle and seeing how that will affect the sound. I mean your 45x solid baffle pretty much sounds the same as my 55x solid baffle, but the size of the baffle can change the sound too. I wanna get to modding the yh-100 back into the 55x too so our fosterphone projects should be able to progress in a pretty similar manner IMO.

Here's what I did for my baffle:
55x baffle felt, laid a layer of blu-tak on the back side of the felt, laid another layer of felt over each spot of blu-tak. It's a solid baffle but I think it is a "soft" baffle. I'm thinking about cutting plastic and then gluing it in permanently for a rigid baffle rather than a soft one.

I'm also suspicious of the middle column that bisects the venting on the housings. I might just cut out the whole vent (save the screw holes) and put in a high air-flow mesh. (Maybe a hex mesh with 75% airflow or just wire mesh with something like 80% if I remember correctly. Round hole mesh is only 50%) I figure I might as well go all out and remove as many obstructions to backwave as possible.

You do have an airtight seal between driver and baffle, right?

You might even try cutting the damping fabric off the back of the driver to get the lowest possible resonant frequency.

Keep in mind that the UR40 transplant was just a proof-of-concept, not a refined, finished project. It may or may not provide the thumps you want, but here it is.

Not to worry. If you do a search on eBay for the terms <sfi> and <bipole> you'll see the dipole version. But you're right-- the closed-back version is strictly a tweeter and won't work as a headphone driver.

I need to revisit my UR-40 retrofit. Add more felt, denser foam, earpads that still have pleather on 'em . . .

45x ortho update:
* the bass problem seems to have something to do with large circumaural pads. I tried stock 45x pleather, Panasonic pleather (from the HT355), and philips mini pleather. The 45x and HT355 pads are about the same, the Philips mini has a lot more bass, but still only about as much as the Panasonic HT355 ortho (the first pair). Looks like the big circumaural won't work too well for the SFI in the 45x housing. Small openning supraural is a lot better.
* mini pad within large pad won't work. I tried putting the mini within the 45x pad, looks cool, but the bass still the same as 45x. I think the problem here is the 45x pad is thick, the ear is further away from the driver, so this supra/circumaural pad still won't work.

So, it looks like the pad need to be small and thin, mini pads the best, but mini pads in that big 45x baffle? ?

Maybe a quad driver solid baffle Accura should be created, for experiment sake....

Who would read all 54 pages? I got tired after 30 pages and didn't care about those soviet clones. I decided to just enjoy my hp-1. The only large thread I've ever got through was that sarcastic BOSE bashing thread.

I think the reason the HT355 ortho has ok bass was due to my ears filled a large portion of the pad, so the actual space left inside was not that much. These pads might be the smallest circumaural to use with SFI (pads have 2.5"x1.5" opening). Sony CD-180's fabric pads are about the same.

With the " mini pleather within 45x pad" combo, it became an extra thick superaural pad, the ear was too far from the drivers, so despite the mini pleather took up most of the space, bass didn't improve....

next one will be SFI transplant into Koss TD60, (small superaural soft pleather, semi open back). Stay tuned.
