If I understand the article correctly, the first generation models can be upgraded to 2nd generation by a firmware update. Is this true? Is the iPod box marked 2nd generation? Thanks for all the replies.

There is no "2nd generation". The only actual hardware change is hard drive and the size of the back metal cover. Outside of that, the box it comes in is smaller and has less accessories. There is only one iPod photo firmware, 1.0 and the just-released 1.1 for all iPod photos.
