Fair question. I'm trekking the Annapurna Circuit with a friend this coming October. That's a serious 16 day trek to an altitude of 5,300 meters. I'm taking three weeks off work.

So having just spent $2,000 on a plane ticket (and another $2,000 on a root canal ), and having to save for this trek, how do I justify buying expensive custom headphones? How I ask you, how? Well I want 'em. And I'm not waiting a year to buy 'em. The answer is to somehow relate the headphones to the trek. They commemorate the trek in advance:

Annapurnas
2007

Oh, and I think they're a cool name for headphones.

I did hear the 880s on the weekend (Pro version - by all accounts the 2005 is very similar but a bit better) and I fell in love. The headphones just melted away and I was alone with tons of wide open airy music. I liked the bass because it was fast, crisp and plenty deep. It was the mid-tones that really blew me away. The detail is shocking. The whole transition from treble to mids to bass seemed so smooth.

It made me decide to put the Darth Beyers on hold. (Someday though - I got the extra leather earpads for them...) I already have very nice closed phones. (In fact, my fellow Head-fier who let me hear the DT880s and un-darthed DT770 Pros was shocked by how good the D77 eggos are. Good stuff in a small package.) But the D880s are a whole new ballgame for my music setup because of the wide open airy soundstage. I am now sitting in keen anticipation of getting my custom "Annapurnas". (Yep, they're engraved...)

I'm most intrigued to see how switching between the velour and leather earpads changes the bass characteristics. I thought that the bass was already fine - and I tested them well on Depeche Mode's Everything Counts, Blind Melon's Tones of Home and Suzanne Vega's Tired of Sleeping - but if the leather increases bass without losing details in the mids, these are going to be truly exceptional cans. Skylab suggests that the leather will work well. It might even be two phones in one... (If I love them as much as I expect, a Larry recable to Blackmax will be down the road once I have fully enjoyed them in original config.)

I'll post pics once my Annapurnas have landed and I have had a chance to burn them in a bit and give them a good listen.
it was a cool saturday morning mate. remember when your anna's come in, this unengraved lowly would like a listen to them...!

I just got my first nice pair of cans. They're beyerdynamic pre-2005 dt770/80 Pros. I love them.

I figured I should post here, because I'm really liking the Beyer sound so far.

If I keep going with the headphone thing, I think I want to try some 880s or 990s next.

Here's a question to start off my presence in the Beyer thread:

While I love my 770s, I feel that I am missing something, and that they will really shine with an amp. I am planning on getting a headphonia with USB DAC when the new version with Bass Boost comes out in a couple weeks.

How much improvement will I hear? Will mid-bass increase and tighten? Will it bring the highs out? Right now, it seems that the highs are further reccessed than the mids, which I know is uncharacteristic of these cans.

I know they are not being driven very well right now, I've used them out of the headphone jack on my Logitech computer speakers, out of my Cowon D2 DAP, and out of my Denon AVR-1600 Receiver. Out of these three sources, The best sounding is EASILY the Cowon D2. But, even so, at the highest volume level, it still isn't very loud with the 770s. So, I know I haven't heard them with proper amped power yet.

I just want to get a feel of how the sound will change with an amp. The new version of the Headphonia will use an AD8397 opamp, if someone know the characteristics of this opamp.

Can't wait to hear them properly amped!

New DT 880 Pro

This is kind of interesting although others may already know this. Beyer have replaced the old "2003" DT 880 Pro with a new "DT 880 Pro" that is - from pictures and specs - identical to the "DT880 Edition 2005" consumer model. The only discernable difference, having read the PDF brochure, is that the Pro model has a coiled 3 meter cable (which sounds kind of short) and the words "DT 880 Pro" silkscreened on the grill instead of the metal "DT 880" name plate on the consumer model.

Oh, and the order ID is clearly newer: '490.970' for the new Pro, whereas the 2005 DT 800 is '481.793'

The new DT 880 Pro is being touted as "an ideal studio monitoring headphone, with analytical qualities". If you like the old Pro (I thought that it was pretty good - actually so extremely good that I ordered its successor, a custom Edition 2005), you'd better look for one now. It's discontinued.

I just three things:
1) I joined the Team-Beyer five years ago with my DT231
2) I love my DT100 and DT770PRO for their sound and comfort
3) I would like to thank to Beyerdynamic for manufacturing such awsome cans and for the unchanged look of DT100 and DT770PRO for so many years.

Beyer lover and fanboy? Guilty as charged...

Got my 2005 DT-990 today, and OMG I am loving it!

It has the 880 sparkle and the punch of 770s. Dunno if I can justify keeping all my Beyers thought.

I know it's early, but can you compare the -03 DT880 to the new DT990?

Just Got Mine!

Just received my '06 DT 880 today and they sound great! Doing a burn-in right now. These are my first hi-end fullsize cans...did a lot of research on Head-fi before selecting these and I am not disappointed in the least. These will compliment my ER-4P/S rather nicely......And did I mention these baby's are comfy!

Happy to be a part of the club.

That's great! Congratulations. Keep us informed as to how they sound as they burn in. I have to live vicariously through people like you as I'm probably three to four weeks from getting mine. (I got my Bithead back today so I'm just sitting here waiting. My D77s keep me going but this is going to be a whole new ballgame.)

My DT990s arent new, I am the third owner, but it havent been used much. I guess they have recieved somewhat 50 hrs of use.

I dont speak much hifi jargon, but I will try describe it as much as possible by listening few tracks and compare.

Muse - Supermassive Black Hole is my bass test track and this part was their biggest difference. DT990 were able to produce thumbs and their bass is fuller in quantity. DT880 do extend, but there is no kick - no fun, if you are a basshead.

John Legend - Save Room also pointed out the bass difference. You could follow the bass line with DT990 much better, you could hear the bass player picking those notes with DT990, whereas DT880 will follow coldly the bass line.

Johnny Cash - Solitary Man is where acoustic guitar and male vocals shine. I would say DT990s are a bit more intimate, the singer and guitars are "closer" to you. DT990s are also a bit more dynamic. DT880 highlights the vocals a bit more than 990s and they are more neutral. Again the fun factor is for 990s.

Jamie Cullum - I Could Danced All Night is how I test the soundstage and dynamics and I think they both fare well and sounded quite similar. Again, DT990 has a bit more dynamic and this track showed that DT990 sound a bit "loudness". Higher and lower end is highlighted, but 880s are definately more neutral, even a bit clinical.

All together, I think the impressions you get from head-fi on both these cans are quite precise. DT990 is more dynamics, has better bass reproduction and tend to be a bit "loudnessy" by highlighting lower end and highs. DT880 is dead neutral, flat and, for my liking, a bit dull. Both of these headphones has quite similar characteristics in case of "airyness" and soundstage (read disclaimer below). DT880 is more neutral and DT990's sound is a bit closer to your head.

All in all, I, personally, like the DT990s more. In speaker world, I would say DT880 is a $1k "highend" stand/bookshelf speakers and DT990 british floorstanding speakers, with sound like B&W.

Disclaimer: My SOHA is dead currently, and I am using AlienDAC with simple cmoy with OPA2132. I believe my SOHA will produce much better imaging and there could be a difference in those "non-frequency"-based characteristics.

And the last but not least: IMHO and YMMV.

EDIT:

Got a pic of my Beyer Straight.

Nice pics indeed. Thanks for the feedback which is about what I expected. It confirms my decision to get the 880s given what I want from my next headphones. But the 990s sound very nice too.
