Wanted: Advice for measuring room acoustics

Thread Starter
Lately I've become curious about just how good or bad the room acoustics are in my apartment's main area, which is where I have my relatively modest home theater system. I think it's a fairly decent room, but I don't always plan to live in this apartment, so knowing how to check other rooms would be nice. However, beyond some vague ideas of looking out for bass nulls and peaks, and not having a square room, I really don't know how to check room acoustics. How about some instructions or advice on what I need to check this stuff out and how to do it, please?

There's a few good papers on room acoustics at the harmon website. There's a program there too.

Also check out realtraps website:

I forgot if the programs work on odd shaped rooms. If not you could get CARA, but it's not free.

I think you could always fix a "bad" room with proper placement and room treatment.

Hope that helps.

Rives Audio has excellent and very instructive pages on room acoustics, click on the links on the left column of the following page, see the animations and read the descriptions, then click on the final link "Putting it all together":

They also have a room simulator:

From Harman you can also download an Excel file that calculates room modes:
