Choosing new reciever - down to 2...

Well, since getting married, I'm going to move my current technics receiver into the family room. This means the office gets a new one...

I'm down to the Onkyo 8511 or the Pioneer Elite A35R. What do you think?

I'm currently using it for 2 things...from the output of my AV710 and output of my marantz cd player to power a pair of Paradigm Titans (v3) as well as using the headphone jack for my Grado sr80s.

Thoughts?

I'm using the Pioneer amp pretty much the same way you are wanting too. It is an awesome amp for the price. I use it as my headphone amp too for my beyer dt880's and they pair very nicely. Although my beyers have a higher impendence than your Grados and I don't know if the Pioneer would be a great match with them. Who knows, they might but I have never tried.

a35r not a receiver, only audio intake and no subwoofer out. it doesnt sound great with low impedance headphones from my experience. otherwize it will sound good with the speakers.

True, the Pioneer A-35R is not a receiver. But it's not because it only has audio inputs and no subwoofer output....it doesn't have a tuner. The Onkyo TX-8511 doesn't have subwoofer output neither, but it's a stereo receiver due to it having a tuner. I used to own the TX-8511.....very smooth sound. If you can get one under $200.00, it's great buy. Crappy spring clips though.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yea, I don't need a tuner...but subwoofer outs might be nice if I decide to ever hook up a set (w/ external plate amp).

Any thoughts on what other direction I should look? I'm kinda confused now...

Have you looked at the current NAD components? They have a couple of receivers and some integrated amps that have good current supplies. I've had good luck with them for over twenty years.

Yea, the one that I caught my eye on was the C320BEE

Thought not a receiver...but I'm trying to keep it (pref) under $200...I know it's dumb and you get what you pay for...

Anyone else have any thoughts?

You can hook up a subwofer with the high level input, that's what I am using in my setup.
The A-35R headphone out sounds very nice with DT880 or HD580/600 (the ones I tried), so you might as well upgrade your sr-80 and give those a try.

Wodgy had the A-35R and C320BEE once I think, and he had good things to say about A-35R while not so good about the C320BEE.
You should try to search his post.

Get the best one you can('t) afford. Bryston has a couple of integrated amps to die for.

What you want is not a receiver, but an integrated amplifier. Just about every major audio company makes one. Marantz, rotel, rega, exposure, NAD, creek, naim, cambridge, harmon-kardon, arcam, and so on. Figure out how much power you need and how much you can spend and see whats out there.

Well...the NAD had a pre-out (which you can connect the sub's line-level inputs to)...and the A-35R does not

Hey TMX, how does the A-35 sound, I mean...what's its sound signature like...laid back, bright, etc.??
