best reference monitor speakers

My all time favorite speaker (esspecially when price is a consideration) is the Mackie Hr824 powered monitor. The frequency response graphs for it are actually "ruler flat". The depth they have is incredible. And I think they produce the bubberiest, tightest, and overally best bass I have ever heard. They beat many 10,000 dollar systems I have heard...

I was wondering what your favorite monitors, or speakers are.

I really liked the mackie hr824 when I heard them for maybe 5 hours at guitar center. However, don't believe the manufacturer provided fr graphs. Yes, they are "real" but they're extremely smoothed graphs that are meaningless. Have you ever seen the hr624's graphs? It looks identical to the 824 except for the bass roll off and cutoff. However, the two speakers' sound signatures are very different. The 624 is obviously a much warmer speaker in the midrange. Both manuf. supplied response graphs are ruler flat. It's a misrepresentation.

Best monitors I have heard in my limited experience are my mbow1's.

Keep listening. Is that 10,000 dollars, pesos or the older Italian lira?

In the Under $400 (negotiated prices) category I really like my M-Audio BX8's. If I could spring for ~$1000 I'd have to seriously sit down and listen to the Event SP8's again.

It would kinda depend upon usage though. A couple people I've talked to that actually use the monitors to mix feel that the SP8's sound "too good."

Definately would have to go with Dynaudio AIR speakers, the brief demo I had with them made me cry that I only have BM15. ADAM S5A also decimated my medicore home studio setup to my ears. On the "cheap", I'd go with the Samson Rubicons. Mackies are a real pain in the ear if your room isn't totally built around them.

I could probably get away with low-end budget consumer audio, using Infinity Primus 150's with a piece of facial tissue taped over the tweeters too, those sound pretty damn close to flat off axis to these ears. Mid-range isn't as liquidy as my Dynaudio's though I still want to hear Sonus Faber Concerto speakers on one of those new-fangled digital amps (JVC, Panasonic, etc), bet that'd be pretty gosh darn flat too.

I like my Sonus Faber Concerto. They are the first edition (not the home theater system although their sound signature it's almost the same) and I know they are not 'neutral' but they are pretty envolving. And the leather and solid wood sides made that my wife wanted them at home too.

I like so call "studio monitors" too. However I am not a big fan of the HR824, I actually prefer the smaller HR624. 824 requires a lot of attention on room treatments.
I haven't heard any big Adams, but I am not so impressed by their smaller monitors, ANF10...etc. I feel the balance is quite strange.
I like Dynaudio monitors, especially the BM6A. Also I love the Truth Audio TA-1P, they are really good. If you don't want an active monitor, I highly recommend TA-1P for anyone in the speaker market. They are easy to drive and got a well balanced sound.

D'oh! I thought you were serious about "best reference" and I went through the trouble of finding the links.
Next time specify under 1K.
Oh well...the below four links are some of the very best for monitoring if you think remastering 'Dark Side of the Moon' qualifies as good enough for "best reference". Each of these companies has something most people could afford at their lower levels. I'm not sure about Genelec though, they're extra special!

ATC - Acoustic Transducer Company

Genelec

Harbeth

PMC - Professional Monitor Company

Genelec does have stuff in the ~$1000 range IIRC.

I don't think we're limiting the thread to $1000...just to monitors that we have heard first hand. I think.

I also preferred the hr624 to the hr824 because of that warm live midrange. Events are good for the money, IMO.
