Micro in the Mail

I've got a Zen Micro coming in the mail, and I wanted to be clear on a few things so that I can start using it as soon as possible. To this end,

Can I download and install the software off the Creative Website? I think not; I think I'll have to install it since I have Win2k. Is this correct?

How long does upgrading the firmware take?

Do I need to charge the battery up all the way after first getting it? As I understand from the battery sticky thread, Li-ion batteries don't have a "memory", but is this something I need to do to calibrate it in any case? Any user reports on how long that will take?

I think the transfer rate was said to be about 2.5MB/s - I'm looking to load on roughly 3 or 4 GB of data right off, some of it files to a USB partition, some music (about half each). Any unusual length of time taken up partitioning the Micro HD?

Thanks for any help.

1. not sure. This might be it, or it might just be an update. i think it's worth a try.
2. upgrading the firmware takes...3 minutes?
3. Whether you do or not probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference. However, the repercussions of you not getting the most out of the battery are pretty big. You don't want to lose 2 hours per charge every time you use it. So, even if it's all myth, I always think it's better to be extra careful the first couple charges. Someone from creative said it's best to fully decharge the player when you first get it. Then, charge it overnight (~12 hours). Play it again until the battery dies (til it's gone gone). Then charge it for 12 hours. Then use normally.
4. I think setting the partition is done by just adjusting the amount alotted in the settings. I think it's instant.

Enjoy your micro. If you haven't seen one in person, get ready to be shocked at how TINY it is.

Thanks much!

1. Downloading the software now - I'd think it's the whole thing at 40 MB, but one listed requirement is the software - wouldn't take long to install off of the CD in any case, I expect. UPDATE: Software needs "Portable Device" connected first. So, while that is apparently the complete software, it's still a no go. Still, this was the least of my worries.

2. Great.

3. I'll make sure to do that with the battery, then. I'm assuming it doesn't come fully charged, however, so I can't exactly let it run down without charging it, correct? Doesn't sound like it would be detrimental to charge it halfway the FIRST time, and I'd have no problem letting it fully charge the SECOND and THIRD or any subsequent ones. The issue is I get home around 3:30, and someone wants to see it in action the afternoon of the day it's due. Actually, maybe not that quickly, but sometime that day. Of course, with my luck it'll arrive once Spring Break has started (Friday) and I'll be out of town...

4. Great.

I look forward to it. No place around here carries much in the way of Creative products; I went to the local Best Buy and Circuit City looking to get a Muvo TX FM and all they had were White Muvo N200s... Just as good, but tech selection in general is severely limited in South Carolina.

I *do* have a Penguin Mints case I'm going to prepare for the thing, though. And I think I'll be using a Dragon Fire Gum tin to hold headphones and other bits.

So, thanks again!

1. it comes with a cd to install from.

2. 7-8 minutes most of the time. depends on how much music you have because it needs to format the hd.

3. i didn't on my first micro, on my new one i did, still to early to tell if it made a difference.

4. just slect it in the options, it's pretty quick
