random quick question: Do you use grills on your speakers?

I have klipsch promedia 4.1's and I recently discovered that they sound cleaner without the grills attached.

Is this a real effect? Should I just keep the grills off, or should I keep them on to prevent damage to the cones?

Thanks all

It's a real effect. The grills absorb some high-frenquency information. I found the Klipsch's to be overly bright with the grills removed. Most speakers that have grills are designed to be used with the grills. But if it sounds good to you, then by all means remove your grills.

Thanks.

I think I might just remove them when I'm listening to something carefully, and keep them on when they're not in use.

I like brightness (<----Dt770 fan)

I removed them from my B&W 705 as soon as I got em.

They also look way nicer without it.

Is there any potential cone-threat in your household? Do you have friends who are compulsive cone-squishers? No? Good! Then do whatever sounds good to you.

Yes, my Tukans serve sans grille as well.

I have Sonus Faber Concerto and they sound better without grilles and with the frot port outer side (they are simmetrical). But I have two children (four and two years old) so I have the grilles in their place.

I have an annoying brother who has a nasty habit of pushing in cones. One time I bought some speakers from Partsexpress, within a week he had pushed in all the domes over the voice coils.

Thats how they're designed to be used

That's not really true. Actually, the vast majority of speakers have grills for protection purposes only. Most manufacturers also say that for better sound you should remove the grills. The only manufacturer I can think of that actually uses the grills for a beneficial sonic effect is Paradigm. The Studio Series' grills act as waveguides, and the speakers sound worse without them according to most people who have heard them both ways. I know there are others, but I can't think of any.

I use my speakers without the grills. It sounds better. If it sounds good, it is good, right?

My JBLs sound flat and dull with the grilles, and they look ugly...so the choice was clear, NO GRILLES for me

I also ran no grilles on my Z-560s when I used them...and my NX10's stock speakers.

i used to take my grilles off prior to a listening session, but now i'm just too lazy and leave them on. I can't hear any difference.

I'm probably one of the few that visually prefer to leave the grills on my speakers.

I can't remove the grilles from my speakers !

I removed the grills from my speakers not so long ago, and they look better. It also seems like the high end is a tad more present, but that may be me imagining things.

They look better without them. The only time my grills go on are when I put them in the box because I'm moving.
