Hello, i currently have the 5751 sylvania gold brand gold pins in my jolida 100a tube cdp - was wondering from people out there who have heard or owned the black plate gold/yellow label sylvania 5751's and the gold brand greyplate gold pin version how close they are in sound, and whether it would be worth it for me to get a pair of those black plate versions of the sylvania gold/yellow label 5751's

If you can find a link to Nick Dangerous' MG Head tube rolling guide, I recall that he preferred the triple-mica blackplate over the grey plates.

b2b, i found the link and read the article, but he does not refer at all to the grey plates, he just says he really likes the black plates, and says that joe's tube lore likes the grey plates, but he makes no reference that he actually listened and compared the two.

Is there anyone out there that has heard both and doesnt mind on commenting?

I heard both. The tri mica black plate is a bit more analytical and has more bass than the gold label/grey plate. But the grey plate is more lush and is more listenable overall. I prefer it.

I never heard the greyplates in the MG Head. However, the Head benefits from any improvements that increase the clarity of the bass. "Unremarkable" bass is a common complaint from experienced Head users.

The general character of the amp is pretty lush as-is, so I would probably prefer the analytical touch (detail) of the blackplates.

Just a guess since I haven't heard both.

Thanks for replying...since my application is primarily as a preamp function within a cd player, do you think there are any other considerations in choosing tubes to roll? How different is it to roll tubes and effect on its sound in regards to amp tube rolling vs. preamp/cdp tube rolling?
