thinking about Building my own speakers,,, - Page 2

What did you have in mind besides the behringer? Everything else is pretty expensive. If you were going to do that, I'd rather just go ahead and build John K's NaO. Gotta have the right room placement for dipoles though.

I still trust a Dennis Murphy design well enough to save myself some money buying a tact or deqx unit for now.

hubcaps, if you're going to solder in notch filters etc, you may as well do a conventional design unless you specifically are seeking out that full range driver sound. I know what the two of us went for

The only cheap one I know of is the behringer dcx2496. There is a big modder community on yahoogroups. However, those guys are pretty crazy and know what they are doing, which doesn't help the noob very much. I think the behringer is a couple hundred dollars. Other devices like the various deqx and tact are many thousands of dollars.

It seems the Hammer Dynamics S12 is a good start project for you.
It is easy to build with a time-tested design and good reviews.

Damn. I was hoping to do a pair of speakers for $400. Two active crossovers is that much alone. I guess I'll have to buy a regular crossover and make absolutely sure I get the right one. That or build my own and that's more research that I'm really willing to do at this point.

No, a single dcx2496 can handle two 3 way speakers, I believe. You don't need to buy more than one unit.

The problem is that the dcx2496 becomes your dac, so your source is forever limited to the quality of the akm dac implementation of the behringer. That's one of the biggest parts of the dcx that the yahoogroup is modding.

For $400, I highly recommend looking at one of Dennis Murphy's budget oriented MB designs or the plop in the box. Those should be under $400 or just borderline if you go all out on it. You won't find drivers of the quality you will use in those designs in speakers under about ~$1000 ballpark.

Assuming you know what frequency you want to cross at, you can build an active crossover very easily. You only need one op-amp per channel for a 12dB/oct crossover. Texas Instruments has a great downloadable software tool for designing active filters of any order.

The only problem is that once you add in cabinet diffraction effects and other nonlinearities, if you didn't plan for these in advance, you'll often wish you had a more adjustable crossover. Also, then you need one power amp channel per driver, which gets expensive. Still, some people swear by active crossovers.

This kind of thing starts to make more sense if you're building power amps as well, for instance one Gainclone per driver, to go along with your homebrew active crossovers.
