SONY Shootout Thread : MDR-SA1000 vs SA3000 vs SA5000 - Page 9

Has anyone got both SA3k and 5k at the same time? How would you describle them? Do SA5k have more bass than SA3k? I owned SA3k, but it made rock sound flat and lacked bass.

I'm intrested in SA5k, but here in Finland it is a bit hard to find a place in which I could listen SA5k. I would be happy if someone could compare these Sonys.

I used to have both. I thought they were about equal at high frequencies, but that the 3K became deficient in realism as you headed down the scale towards the mids and lows. The 5K's bass is a bit better but it is not an utterly revolutionized sound signature. If rock sounded flat and bass-deficient to you on the 3K, I think it will sound only a little less so on the 5K. I think you would be better served by considering a different line of headphones altogether.

Has anyone compared the SA3k's to the SA1k's?

I found the 1k's for $95 and the 3k's for $175. Wondering if the price difference is utterly worth it. I can afford the upgrade, but if the overall sound difference will be marginal at best, I'll just save the $75 towards a pair of 5k's.

Although I do plan on getting the SA5k's sometime down the road, but for $100, I think the 1k's are winners.

I'll be running the 1k's off a LD2++ tube amp, if I choose that's the headphone for me at this point.

Thanks,

-Nick
