Anybody ever turned triflanges into...biflanges?

I just got my westone um2's with the shure triflanges (I got them used), and they go in fine...to a point. The third and largest flange is too large to fit into my ear canal. I'll push them in as far as I can, but as soon as I let go, they pop out to the point of the third flange.

Has anybody cut one of them off to allow them to go deeper? I don't want to mess these up and have to order another set, especially if that will just entail me not being able to use them either.

i've done this with the ety tri-flanges... cut off the small front flange and moved it around to the back (so the stem wouldn't protrude). at first, i liked it because it was easier to insert. but ultimately i found the unmodded tips were more comfortable, easier to insert, more isolating and sounded better.

of course, i don't know if my experience is even relevent to your situation, but there ya go.

That's exactly how I use my Ety tri-flanges. I cut off the largest flange.

the stem doesn't poke through when you do that? or are you using the er6i, with the nubby stem?

I'm using the ER-4S and no the stem doesn't poke through.

Thanks. Did you cut the flange away from the stem, or did you cut the stem in between the 2nd and 3rd flange?

Instead of the Shure triflanges, I use the ETY triflanges. Though the three flange size is the same, the ETY's don't have a stem, so the whole thing fits closer in the ear.

I've tried it with the E5c and it didn't work well. I got better results shortening the stem.

I was wondering...do you Ety users prefer the tri-flange to the foams? I can't decide -- both have their up side. But sound-wise, I think I hear a difference in the sound texture...maybe, I think, the flange is more "accurate?"

I sometimes think the foamies sound warmer...but my brain's so screwed up that I can't tell if it "feels" warmer, rather than sounds warmer.

So I tried the triflanges again, and I found that I liked the sound better than the complies, but they still wouldn't fit. I decided to go for it and I cut off the largest flange.

Well, if anyone has a problem with the um2's bass and isolation, this is the perfect solution. It completely rids them of all bass and most of the isolation. Woo.

I cut off the smallest flange on the Ety. It was more of a pressure issue for me. I could never get the largest flange in my ear, there just seemed to be too much pressure in my ear to get it in. So by cutting off the smallest flange. It decreased the volume change and the largest flange slides right in now.

I both cut off the smallest flange of my e3c's and shortened the stem as per the mod instructions somewhere on this board. Mostly because I was unable to get the tri-flanges into the ear canal. Isolation-wise, close to foamies IMO, sound-wise, about the same. I find I rather like the mod.

yeah, i'm going to order some ety triflanges and cut off the smallest flange this time. apparently the largest one is important. hopefully that will make it so I can use the triflanges again.
