I am quite new to this forum but have there ever been ideas about making a portable tube amp? Do you know if that could be possible or what it would look like? Just an idea maybe i am weird...

I seem to recall that someone had designed a huge powerpack for the Earmax, but I couldn't locate any info on it. I did find this, however:

Hope this helps.

A year or 2 ago a portable tube amp passed through some members hands for evaluation. Haven't heard anything about it since.

Search the achives?

Seems with shock, vibration, power requirements and heat that a portable tube amp would have limited utility. The one sampled here was rather large if I recall.

most likely would have to be a hybrid type of amp with maybe "pencil tubes",the type once used in hearing aids, mated to a discrete or monolithic output follower stage for driving the cans.

the main problem is not with the doing but getting the performance level high enough to make it a worthwhile product.portable is easy, portable AND high performance is not.

Throw class-a operation right out the window for one.The current demands will rapidly drain a battery down to zip.

The other option would be to use DC/DC regualtors and current pumps but then the filtering requirements would mean toss out any thoughts of compact size.

can be done but as in most things to get something you have to give something up in return

the problem is not one of the size of the amp, it is a problem of a power suply. just like cell phones.

the technology to make the electronics for the motorolla flip-phones existed for many years before they were actually made, because the batterys were too big at the time....

similarly, you will find problems with the amp.

siljose has made a toob amp, with teh actual amplifyer stage nominally larger in surface area than a credit card. look up "parts for tube amp" in the diy section, there is a link to another site that has pictures.
