New Ei Elite tubes

This is some info I gleaned from AudioAsylum and thought I should pass along. Of particular interest to those using stock tubes in the MG Head or using current production tubes in other equipment.

These are Ei tubes that have been tested and selected for a low noise floor and low microphonics and have gold pins. They have been used by Marshall, the guitar amplifier manufacturer and are now offered to the public.

It looks like their are other interesting current production tubes on this site as well.

Wow... very interesting! Thanks for the link. I may order a pair of EL84's and a couple of the 12ax7's even though I no longer own a MG Head.

Is that crazy or what? Pretty soon I'll join Hirsch in the tube asylum.

The Moretto came with an Ei 12AU7. I only had a few 12AU7's on hand, but all of them were better than the Ei. Note that until I got the Moretto, I didn't have an amp that used 12AU7's. Why I had any at all is something I'm taking up with the shrink when they catch me and take me back to the asylum

Tubes

I sitll have stock tubes. I really do not know anything about tubes, will these help my MG Head sound better? Should I go this route? Thanks for any input.

Yes, definitely read Nick's guide for recommendations and also search the archives for MG Head tube rolling for more information. JJ and Ei EL84 output tubes are an improvement over the stock Sovtek EL84 or Chinese 6P14 and are a good choice if you are on a budget or don't want to hunt down or pay the relatively high prices of NOS (new old stock).

What do you think are the top choices for a current production 12AX7? Have you tried any other besides the JJ that are as good or better? I went from JJ to NOS so I really don't know. My guess would be that the JJ 12AX7 sits at or near the top of current production of this type and that from there you would have to go NOS.

If the JJ 12ax7 (ECC83) is the top of the line in current production tubes, I'd start stocking up on NOS tubes NOW! I found it to be seriously lacking in resolution and dynamics. The Svetlana 12ax7 fared better, but only slightly.

We need to source a good quality 12ax7 (or 5751) in current production. I know it can be done. The JJ E88CC (6922) is a fine example. It's a great tube. I wonder why their own ECC83 is so poor in comparison?

If you're asking specifically if the Ei Elite are good choices for tube-rolling, the problem is, we've only just discovered them. If you're asking in general, the answer is a resounding yes. Good choices in tubes will make your MG Head sound better. Bad ones will make your amp sound worse. Try a couple of different ones, everyone has their own favourites. These are pretty cheap, so some people are probably going to be trying them (me, for instance, although not in the MG Head).

They quoted me a price not only on a matched octet of new production tubes (my Manley Stingray takes 8 EL84's), they quoted me prices on a few tubes that aren't listed.

Including PCL 805's.

Well about the third thing I looked at on Head-Fi, even before I registered, was the xcan tube rolling session. Then a few days later I had the JJ's on the way, then my wallet was history.

Anyone order an Ei Elite 12AX7's for the MG Head yet? Hoping these are awesome tubes so I can order some and won't to pay a lot for NOS tubes! But, that may just be wishful thinking. Hope it's not though.

Remember if you order some, you can compare them with the tubes in the THSP. You're #1 on the second round.

Tubes

Yes I ordered Ei Elites last week. Nick, thanks. I read your tube rolling guide and it was very informative and helpful. I will post a review after I get them. The only problem is the only thing I have to compare them to is the stock tubes that came with the MG Head.

Hey Kieran, that's okay! As long as they are better than the stock tubes. Well... hopefully they will be up to par or better than the current NOS tubes available, but... well, again, wishful thinking maybe?
