High quality classical recordings?

I'm not a big classical collector...but I am interested in a really high quality recording to try out with my new cans. I don't have a sacd/hdcd player...so keep that in mind. Any suggestions? Preferably something with strings.

There is such an abundance of wealth! Go to Classicstoday.com and take a look at the reviews. Also, let us know what you enjoy listening to so that we can make appropriate recommendations.

How about CDs with stunning sound quality? I have a lot of very clean modern recordings which are good quality, but somehow not... special. And many more analog transfers where hiss reduction has limited the sound. In listening to new equipment I sometimes put on Kreisler Beethoven recordings transferred by Pearl, sometimes modern baroque performances from Gardiner or Musica Antiqua. The Beaux Arts trio has good sounding (and good) recordings. The best sound I have is on a record (Mozart Clarinet Quintet, Tashi) and I no longer own a record player .

Well I'll mention one with strings, albeit one violin:

recording is superb

Ideally it would be deep, dark, haunting strings. Sparse is okay.

Bach: 6 Cello Suites

I hope it's dark enough for you.

There is also the Shostakovich Violin Concerto which is discussed in the Best Violin Concerto thread.

If you want something orchestral, try Tchaikovksky's Serenade for Strings and Souvenirs de Florence released on hybrid sacd, so you don't have to worry about your player decoding it.

Albinoni's Adagio for strings may also please you, and certainly this:

Barber's Adagio is a very moving piece, which might be considered dark.

Feeney's Dracula Suite on Naxos is creepy, and spectacularly recorded:

R Strauss, Metamorphosen, Karajan, BPO

Schoenberg, Transfigured Night, Karajan, BPO

Ligeti, String Quartets, Arditti SQ

Berio, Voci, Kashikashian

I believe that they are all deep, dark, haunting strings. First two are a bit old (?) recordings, but their sound is sufficiently good. 'Voci' is not a string only music, but it fits the characters well and the recording is great.

@I've tried to include images for the first time. Hmm... perhaps they are too spacious?

Thanks for the suggestions...I'm going to download some clips today and pick a couple of these up if I like them.

After playing the game Arcanum and downloading the soundtrack

I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for something similar. I'm not a fan of most classical music, but I do really like the depressed, melancholy atmosphere of this soundtrack. I haven't been able to find anything else like it.

Schnittke's viola concerto is intense.

Funny you mention that because that was the closest I'd found but I thought it was a bit over the top, kind of out there bordering almost on senseless noise at certain parts.
