You're not alone. There are many who consider his performance with Hendl to be the benchmark.

I relistened to the Scottish Fantasy and I still prefer the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 but it is a mighty fine concerto.

Brahms, no question (though the last movement is weaker than the others). This is a nice recording, but Perlman/Giulini is even better, I think.
